XCONFIG(8x) COMMAND REFERENCE XCONFIG(8x) NAME xconfig - configure workstation for X windows operation For 4310, 4320, and 4330 series UTek products only. SYNOPSIS /etc/xconfig [ -print ] [ -server server_name server_flags ] [ -console console_emulator console_flags ] [ -login login_emulator login_flags ] DESCRIPTION A workstation is configured using xconfig, thereby enabling the workstation to use the X Window System software. The program xconfig allows the user to set or change the following X attributes on the workstation. X server to be enabled Attributes of the X server Terminal emulator for login window Attributes of terminal emulator Terminal emulator for console window Attributes of terminal emulator The program xconfig writes those changes into the X.conf(5x) file. When rebooted, rc.X(8x) is executed; xconfig then looks at the X.conf(5x) file to decide if and how the X window system should be started up. After changing any necessary attributes the X window system must be restarted so that the server or terminal emulator may be replaced; this can be done by sending the hangup signal (SIGHUP) to the xstart(8x) process, if the system is currently running. This destroys any windows currently active and forces the display back to a login window. Typically, xconfig is invoked with no options. The program prompts the user with questions to set the attributes mentioned. First it asks for the name of the X window server to be started. If the answer is none, no further questions are asked; any other string is assumed to be the name of the X server. The user is asked if the default command line options for the server are acceptable and allows replacing these if desired; xconfig then prompts for the terminal emulator to run in the login and console windows. The user may accept the default command line options for the chosen terminal emulator or enter another set. The xstart process invoked from /etc/rc.X uses the X.conf(5x) file, starting the appropriate X window system processes. Printed 5/12/88 1
XCONFIG(8x) COMMAND REFERENCE XCONFIG(8x) OPTIONS Typically, the user would invoke xconfig without any switches. The full list of capabilities follows: -print Prints the configuration values from the file X.conf(5x). -server server_name server_flags xconfig writes the name of the chosen server and options to be passed to the server in the X.conf(5x) file. -console console_name console_flags xconfig writes the name of the chosen terminal emulator to be used for the console window and options to be passed to the emulator in the X.conf(5x) file. -login login_name login_flags xconfig writes the name of the chosen terminal emulator to be used for the login window and options to be passed to the emulator in the X.conf(5x) file. FILES X.conf(5x) This file is created by xconfig(8x) and is used by xstart(8x) so that the X window configuration is remembered from one boot to the next. RETURN VALUE [NO_ERRS] Command completed without error. [USAGE] Incorrect command line syntax. Execution terminated. [P_ERR] A system error occurred. Execution terminated. See intro(2) for more information on system errors. [NP_WARN] An error warranting a warning message occurred. Execution continues. Printed 5/12/88 2
XCONFIG(8x) COMMAND REFERENCE XCONFIG(8x) CAVEATS No input validation is done for entered data. When the X window system is turned off using xconfig and xstart, the file /etc/ttys is modified and a SIGHUP signal is sent to the init process; this ensures that a user may login to the system. The file /etc/ttys should never have the console device enabled for login when the X window system is running. SEE ALSO X(1x), xstart(8x), X.conf(5x), rc.X(8x). Printed 5/12/88 3
