volcopy(1M-vxfs) (VxFS) volcopy(1M-vxfs)
NAME
volcopy (vxfs) - make a literal copy of a Veritas File System (VxFS)
SYNOPSIS
volcopy [-F vxfs] [genericoptions] [-e] fsname srcdevice volname1
destdevice volname2
DESCRIPTION
This manual page is an addendum to the volcopy(1M) manual page. It
describes the Veritas File System (VxFS) specific features of the vol-
copy command.
volcopy makes a literal copy of the Veritas file system using a block
size matched to the device.
OPTIONS
-F vxfs Specifies the Veritas file system type (FSType).
genericoptions
Options supported by the generic volcopy command.
-e Processes until the end of tape, then prompts for the next
tape in the sequence.
If the -e option is not selected, the program requests
length and density information, if this information is not
already provided on the command line, or if this information
is not recorded on an input tape label. If the file system
is too large to fit on one reel, volcopy prompts for addi-
tional reels. Labels of all reels are checked.
Tapes may be mounted alternately on two or more drives. If volcopy is
interrupted, the user is prompted either to quit or escape to the com-
mand interpreter. If the user chooses to escape to the command inter-
preter, other operations can be performed [such as labelit(1M)]. The
user can then return to volcopy by exiting the command interpreter. Note
that the -e and -feet options are mutually exclusive.
fsname The mounted name of the file system being copied (for
example, / or /usr).
srcdevice The device from which the copy of the file system is being
extracted.
volname1 The volume from which the copy of the file system is being
extracted.
destdevice The target device to which the file system will be writ-
ten.
volname2 The target volume to which the file system will be writ-
ten.

srcdevice or destdevice are specified as the disk partition or tape
(for example, /dev/ios0/rsdisk00, /dev/rmt/???).
volname1 or volname2 are the physical volume names. Such label names
contain up to six characters. volname* may be "-" to use the existing
volume name. fsname and volname are recorded in the super block.
NOTES
volcopy does not support tape-to-tape copying. Use dd(1) for tape-to-
tape copying.
FILES
/var/adm/filesave.log
