     st(7) DG/UX 4.30 st(7)

     NAME
st - AViiON family tape subsystem

     DESCRIPTION
The st tape subsystem provides support for tape drives
compatible with the Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI).
The models supported are as follows:

          Model # Description
          6577 QIC-150 150MB 1/4" cartridge
          6586-A, 6587-A 1600 bpi 1/2" autoload streaming reel-to-reel
          6588-A 1600/6250 bpi 1/2" autoload streaming reel-to-reel
          6588-TA 800/1600/6250 bpi 1/2" autoload streaming reel-to-reel
          6590 8mm 2GB helical scan

A tape unit may be accessed directly via the special file
nodes in /dev/rmt. These nodes are named in the form:

          /dev/rmt/st(<adap>@<c>(<addr>),<i>,<d>)[hml][n]

where <adap> is the name of the controller, <c> is the
device code, <addr> is the address of the adapter, <i> is
the SCSI ID number, <d> is the unit number, [hml] specifies
high (h), medium (m), or low (l) tape density for those
models on which density selection is supported, and [n]
specifies that the tape unit does not automatically rewind
to Beginning-of-Tape (BOT) when closed. The nodes in
/dev/rmt provide access as a character special device as
          described in rmt(7).

When accessed via the nodes in /dev/rmt, the maximum record
size is 32,768 bytes for all models listed above. Model 6577
supports only fixed-length physical records of 512 bytes,
while the other models support variable-length physical
records. For this reason, I/O to model 6577 must be done in
multiples of 512 bytes. Otherwise, the I/O will fail with
          an errno of EINVAL.

     FILES
