NAME
cisc - AViiON family SCSI adapter subsystem
DESCRIPTION
The cisc SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) adapter
subsystem consists of an intelligent SCSI adapter controller
which links the host system VME bus to a SCSI bus. Cisc is
the SCSI interface used in the AViiON 5000/6000 servers.
Devices on the SCSI bus are accessed through the SCSI
adapter. As a result, the SCSI adapter name must be included
in a SCSI device specification. A cisc SCSI adapter is
specified in the form:
cisc@n(addr)
where n is the hexadecimal device code of the controller,
and addr is the control space starting address for the
controller.
The cisc adapter subsystem attempts to use the SCSI
synchronous data transfer protocol by negotiating a
synchronous offset with each device on the the SCSI bus. If
this negotiation step fails, the asynchronous mode is used.
Note that a cisc controller firmware revision level of 11 or
greater is required to support the synchronous SCSI
protocol. If the controller is found to have an earlier
firmware revision, an informational message is logged to the
system console at system boot time, and the asynchronous
mode is selected.
