UUCPD(8N) COMMAND REFERENCE UUCPD(8N)

NAME
uucpd - uucp network login server

SYNOPSIS
     /etc/uucpd

DESCRIPTION
Uucpd is a server which supports uucp traffic over the
TCP/IP network. The server is started from inetd(8n) when a
connection is received on the designated port; see
     services(5n).

When a coonnection is established, uucpd will ask for a
login account by sending the string: "login: ". The remote
system should then send a username. The user must be listed
in /etc/passwd and have a login shell of
/usr/lib/uucp/uucico for the login to be allowed. If the
account has a password, uucpd will send "Password: " and a
     password string is expected.

Uucpd leaves login/logout records in /usr/adm/wtmp.

EXAMPLES
Typical /usr/lib/uucp/L.sys entry to call a system over the
     network.

ncsu Any TCP uucp ncsu ogin: uuncsu ssword: example

RETURN VALUE
     [0] uucpd is running.

     [1] uucpd is not running.

CAVEATS
The port number for uucp interconnection sometimes differs.
Earlier UTek releases (and Internal Tektronix systems) used
the port number 251; whereas this release and Berkeley
systems use the port number 540.

Earlier systems do not expect to have to login when using
uucp. They can be upgraded by adding an expect-send
sequence to the /usr/lib/uucp/L.sys file on the calling
     machine.
