This is especially useful when the variable ignoreeof, which causes ^D characters to not terminate the shell is set. EXAMPLES The following .logout file will cause the terminal screen to be cleared and the date to be printed before logging out. clear date FILES $HOME/.logout File containing commands to be executed before logging out CAVEATS If there are stopped jobs when logout is executed, a message is printed and the logout is aborted.
