GRFCOMPRESS(1) COMMAND REFERENCE GRFCOMPRESS(1)

NAME
     grf_compress - compress a GRF file

SYNOPSIS
     grfcompress

DESCRIPTION
The grfcompress program consolidates rows of identical
pixel information and repeated patterns into a more concise
form in Generic Raster Format (GRF) files. GRF files are
compressed to save storage space and reduce network data
transfer time because screendata and copydata files can be
quite large, sometimes exceeding 2 Mbytes.

This program has no command line parameters. Input is from
standard input and output is to standard output. Everything
grfcompress needs to know is in the GRF header.

Three levels of compression are supported: pixel, simple,
and pattern; they are described, along with GRF headers and
     tags, in grf(5).

This program does not compress a file that has already been
compressed. The optimal level of compression is accomplished
     in the first pass.

For information on expanding compressed files, see
     grf_expand(1).

FILES
stdin Input is a normal uncompressed GRF
                    screendata or copydata file.

stdout Output is a compressed GRF screendata or
                    copydata file.

DIAGNOSTICS
If a problem prevents file compression, grfcompress aborts
and prints a self-explanatory error message.

CAVEATS
The grfcompress command will not compress a monochrome data
file consisting of a 1-bit pixel field width.
