FD12(8)  —  Pixar Programmer’s Manual

NAME

fd12− convert Version-1 fast-disk file system to Version-2

SYNOPSIS

fd12 [ −t bakdir ] part [ part part ... ]

DESCRIPTION

Fd12 converts a Version-1 Fast-Disk filesystem to a Version-2 format.  Version-1 filesystems appear only in Beta-test releases; if this release is the first Fast-Disk software release for you, then you do not need to use fd12 .  Any attempt to use fd12 on a Version-2 filesystem will result in a diagnostic message and no alterations to the filesystem.

Each part argument specifies a Fast-Disk partition, such as /dev/rmx0b. Fd12 will operate on each partition in turn.

In the event of an unexpected filesystem or disk hardware failure, fd12 stores backup directory information in the UNIX directory /tmp. The −c option permits the specification of a different location in the event that /tmp is not large enough to accommodate the backup information.  If fd12 cannot save all its backup information, it will complain and not attempt to modify the filesystem.

USAGE

Perform the following steps for each Version-1 Fast-Disk filesystem that you are converting.

(1) Use v1fdck to verify the consistency of (and possibly repair) the Version-1 filesystem.  Attempting to use fd12 on an inconsistent Version-1 filesystem can damage your data. V1fdck accepts the same command arguments as fdck. (Note that the fdck utility in this software distribution operates only on Version-2 filesystems.  The v1fdck utility operates only on Version-1 filesystems, and is necessary only to check the consistency of the filesystem prior to running fd12.)

(2) Run fd12.

(3) Run fdck on the filesystem to reconstruct the free list.  It will ask,

/dev/rmxXX: freelist on disk is incorrect

∗∗∗ RECONSTRUCT FREELIST? Answer yes to this question.  (Note: it is possible that fdck will report no problems with the free list.  This is normal also.)

(4) The Fast-Disk now contains a valid, Version-2 filesystem, which may be used with the utilities and libraries in this software distribution.

DIAGNOSTICS

part: beginning conversion, do not interrupt
Conversion is beginning.  Do not interrupt the program with Control-C. You will be notified when the operation is complete.

cannot create filename: reason
The specified UNIX backup file could not be created.

error writing backup file filename
An error occurred while writing a backup file in the UNIX filesystem. The most likely cause is that the UNIX filesystem ran out of space. Use the −t option to specify an alternate location for the backup files.

part: insufficient free space in filesystem to perform conversion
The Fast-Disk filesystem does not contain adequate free space to perform the conversion operation.  Use the Version-1 v1fdls and v1fdrm utilities (in /usr/pixar/hsi/update) to remove some files and then start the conversion procedure again at step (1).

part: failed to write object
fd12 could not write a location on the Fast-Disk.  Check the Fast-Disk hardware for errors and try again.

part: conversion successful
The conversion for Version-2 filesystem formate is successful and complete. Fdck must now be run to fix the free list.

part: no action has been taken
For a reason explained previously, fd12 has decided not to convert the filesystem.  The filesystem is left unchanged.

part: FILESYSTEM IS PARTIALLY CORRUPT
An unexpected error was encountered during the conversion. The filesystem has been left in a transition state, where neither the Version-1 nor Version-2 utilities will operate on it. Do not attempt to do anything further to the filesystem. Call Pixar Customer Service and ask for assistance.

part: block number read error: reason
The indicated block in the filesystem could not be read. Retry the operation.  If it continues to fail, call Pixar Customer Service.

part: block number write error: reason
The indicated block in the filesystem could not be written. Retry the operation.  If it continues to fail, call Pixar Customer Service.

part: is already a Version-2 filesystem
The filesystem is already Version-2.  No action has been (or should be) taken.

part: bad magic number (value) in superblock
The specified Fast-Disk partition does not contain a Version-1 filesystem. Check the partition; its pathname should be of the form /dev/rmxNb, where N is a digit.
