chkinittab(1M) —
NAME
chkinittab − check /etc/inittab file
SYNOPSIS
/etc/chkinittab
DESCRIPTION
chkinittab runs any time idmkinit(1M) creates a new /etc/inittab(4) file or upon reboot if a new console change has occurred (see chgcon(1M)). This command checks the /etc/inittab file for entry lines that specify getty(1M) or uugetty(1M), and changes the action field from respawn to off if getty or uugetty specify a device name that refers to console. Since /dev/console can specify a video display or a serial terminal, multiple getty processes should not exist on the same device. For example, if console specifies serial port address 0x3F8 and /dev/tty00 also specifies the same port, then chkinittab will turn off the /dev/tty00 entry in the /etc/inittab file.
If console specifies No Console, chkinittab changes the console’s action field in the /etc/inittab file from respawn to off. On the contrary, if console specifies a video adaptor or a serial terminal, then chkinittab changes the action field for the console entry from off to respawn in the /etc/inittab file.
