ATXADMIN(1)  —  NEWS-OS Programmer’s Manual

NAME

atxadmin − system management tool for AppleTalk networks

SYNOPSIS

atxadmin [ −toolkitoption ...  ] [ −bell on|off ]

DESCRIPTION

The atxadmin command activates an X Window System tool specifically designed for system management of AppleTalk networks.  The application has three major functions.

AppleTalk setting/monitoring
To use AppleTalk, first click on Network setting.  (This does not necessarily apply to cases where the AppleTalk network is initiated from /etc/rc∗, etc.)  The “Network setting” panel pops up.  This panel allows up/down setting of interface zone names, net ranges and zone lists, and can also be used to start or stop AppleTalk network operation.  (This function is equivalent to that performed by the ifconfig command on conventional networks.)
When LocalTalk interface is available, you can choose “lt#” [# integer] item in the interface menu. In this case, zone name input is prohibited. In addition, you already select “seed router”, “net range” will be changed to “net number”. You can set the only one zone name. (Becase LocalTalk network is Phase 1 network) In addition, you also allow to set up Mac IP with choosing the Mac IP button.  See also atconfig manual pages on the detailed configuration of Mac IP.
This function is available to super user only. The Node information function is used to handle zones or the entities they contain.  This panel (“Node information”) consists of three parts: a menu bar, a zone list and an entity list.  Upon initial activation, the zone list displays the currently active zones.  If the user clicks on a zone, the entities it contains are shown in the entity list.  Selecting an entity from this list activates ECHO test and Printer status from the menu bar.  “ECHO test” executes atping for the selected entity.  When it is completed, press Ctrl-C followed by the return key.  This is equivalent to running ping on a conventional network.  “Printer status” executes atstatus.  When it is completed, press the return key.  This command is meaningful only when directed at a printer or printer server.  (If it fails, a message to that effect is the only thing returned.)
Note: The information displayed in the zone list and entity list is not updated in real time.  The entity list shows data that was current at the moment the panel was popped up, and the entity list shows data current when the entities in question were selected.  To update either of the the lists’ contents, press the button at the top of the list.  To monitor the operating status of an AppleTalk network, select Network statistics.  The “Network statistics” panel pops up.  The graphs it contains are self-explanatory.  The initial setting of the DIFFERENCE/ABSOLUTE switch is “DIFFERENCE”.  The network statistical information available includes cumulative figures from when the AppleTalk network was activated to the present.  Therefore, the current number of packets or bytes will be expressed by the difference between the present value and the previous value.  This switch can also be used, if desired, to display the cumulative figures.
To change the data Polling interval or Subject interface, select Control... from the File menu.  This brings up the “Control” panel.
From the Options menu it is possible to pop up panels for displaying other types of special information.  The “Routing” panel, displayed using Routing information..., shows the status of routing tables.  The display produced by this panel is analogous to that obtained by running the atnetstat command with the −r option.  Refer to the manual for that command for more information.  Selecting Protocoll statistics... pops up the “Protocol statistics” panel, which displays data on AppleTalk network control packets.  Refer to the documents for how to read the graphs that appear in this panel.

File server setting
The /etc/afpusers setting specifies the user as unauthorized for access.  Such users are unable to access the file server.
This function is available to super user only. The directory setting item is used to specify which directories can be accessed from specific clients, etc.  (In the case of super user, first you are prompted for the user name.  Input the user name for which the settings are to take affect.)  If the user is “root”, the setting will be “public volume”.  Otherwise it will have to be specified as a “private volume” for each single user.  If the user name is entered correctly, a “Server directories” panel will pop up.  The presently selected entry is displayed in the large center area.  Select any items to be deleted or modified.  The buttons on the right are then enabled and ready to be pushed.
Selecting Delete erases the selected item.
Selecting Modify brings up the modification panel.  From this panel it is possible to specify the NEWS directory name, the volume name as seen by the client, a list of access-authorized users and the password.  To specify the directory, use either direct key input or press the Directory button to pop up the file selector.  The file selector is the same as the familiar one used by OSF/Motif, but it can only be used for selecting directories.  An error results if an existing file name is selected (or input).  (Checking for this error takes place only if the file selector is used.)
Information displays a variety of data about NEWS directories.  This panel can be used to make permission settings, but this should be done prudently as the results can be quite sweeping.  OK is used to save the changes.
Pressing the OK button on the “directory setting” button builds directories using the current settings and saves the settings either in /etc/afpexports, in the case of super user, or in $HOME/.afpexports, in the case of normal users.  The progress of the directory building process can be monitored from the “Making server directories” panel.  The Start/Stop buttons are used to start and stop file server processes.  Refer to afsd for information on the various parameters that can be used.
This function is available to super user only.

Print spooler setting
The /etc/printcap setting function is used to specify NEWS printer control files.  This function is identical to the “Printer” function of sxadmin.  Refer to the sxadmin manual for details.
This function is available to super user only. The Start/Stop buttons are used to start and stop printer server processes.  Refer to apsd for information on the various parameters that can be used.
This function is available to super user only.

OPTIONS

In addition to the standard X Toolkit options, the following are also supported.

−bell Specifies whether a bell should sound to alert the user to error and warning messages. The default setting is “on”.

RESOURCES

In addition to the resources of the widgets used by atxadmin, the application itself ahs many resources.  Refer to the resource file for details.

MULTI-LANGUAGE SUPPORT

Japanese (Shift JIS/EUC) and English (ISO 8859-1) are supported.
