NAME
psconfig -- the Predictive Support subsystem
SYNOPSIS
/usr/diag/pred/psconfig [item-key-command]
DESCRIPTION
HP Support Watch is an early warning system that links HP 9000 Series 800 systems via modem to the expertise of the Hewlett-Packard support organization. It assists in transforming unscheduled downtime into scheduled maintenance:
records a history of system configurations and activity; locates potential problems with peripherals and memory before they occur; transmits information, errors, and warnings to the HP support team; mails messages to designated users.
HP Support Watch is a proactive approach to support. Predictive Support is a subsystem of HP Support Watch (sw).
Without arguments, the command psconfig is the same as the sw command. As part of the installation process, running sw asks for required information to configure HP Support Watch. After that, sw displays the HP Support Watch Main Menu, which includes access to the two subsystems -- Remote Watch (rw) and Predictive Support (psconfig).
Select "Run the Predictive Support ’psconfig’ interface" to run Predictive Support, generate reports or initiate Response Center transfers, or configure the following: customer information schedule
transfer information memory coverage
peripheral devices coverage code word
reports output options utilities
Only the root user can enter or change configuration information in Predictive Support. Non-root users can access all other areas of the user interface.
The psconfig command, with arguments, can start or stop a Predictive Support run without displaying the menu interface. It can start various kinds of data transfers and can print various kinds of reports, independent of a Predictive run.
Arguments can consist of a single word "item key command" or a two word item key command.
Single word item key commands can either run or stop Predictive:
run A Predictive run proceeds to analyze the system, and when appropriate, generates an Action Summary Report and transmits any data or comments to the HP Response Center. Before the analysis begins, Predictive checks if there is a valid code word, and if necessary, transmits a code word request, to the Response Center and receives a code word download.
stop When Predictive is running, it can be stopped at any time.
One group of two word item key commands involves transfers:
transfer normal
This transfers the Predictive event file, PSDCFILE, to the Response Center, provided that there is data to be transmitted. If there is no data, a file transfer connection does not take place. Once its data has been transmitted, this file transfer option also allows any pending downloads from the Response Center to be retrieved. The transfer normal command does the same kind of transfer as a Predictive run does if automatic transfer is configured "yes".
transfer test
This starts a test of the file transfer mechanism by attempting to transfer the test file, PSDCTSTD, to the Response Center. This option does not allow downloads from the Response Center to occur.
transfer force
This forces a connection to the Response Center for the primary purpose of receiving code word or ruleset downloads. It also transmits the PSDCFILE, if present, to the Response Center.
transfer request
This connects to the Response Center to request a code word. The code word request file is PSCODERD; the code word download file is PSCODEWD. This option also transmits the PSDCFILE, if there is any data, and allows pending ruleset downloads to occur. The transfer request command does the same kind of transfer as a Predictive run does if automatic transfer is configured "yes" and there is no valid code word.
The other group of two word item key commands involves printing reports:
print action
The Action Summary Report contains the results of the Predictive analysis of the system. It contains normal events -- messages resulting from data already logged on the system (raw events) that are collected by the Predictive utilities. It contains internal events -- messages that report an unresolved internal condition of the Predictive software. It describes datacomm transfers -- messages regarding the successful or unsuccessful transfer of a file. It describes code word status -- messages regarding any feedback or problem while processing code words. The Action Summary Report prints in reverse chronological order (messages from the most recent Predictive run are listed first). The start time and date precedes the messages for each run. The event time and header information precede each message. Action Summary messages are tagged as "INFORMATIONAL" (no action necessary) or "WARNING" (action recommended). Messages that are also tagged "(RC)" are sent to the Response Center.
print versions
The Versions Report lists the current versions of the Predictive rulesets on the customer system. The rulesets decide what information to collect as well as where and how. Event messages are sent when ruleset thresholds are passed. The Versions Report is used to assist in troubleshooting problems.
print configuration
The Configuration Report details all of the information entered in the onsite Predictive Support database. This includes customer information such as the software handle, system serial number, etc. This includes file transfer information such as the modem setup, the RC phone number, etc. It also includes peripheral device and memory coverage, reports output options, utilities, Predictive run schedule, and code word status.
print trace
The Trace Report provides an audit detail of each Predictive run. It lists progress messages and error information in reverse chronological order. It is used to assist in troubleshooting problems.
print psconfig
The PSCONFIG Log Report provides an audit detail of activities performed in psconfig. It lists these activities in reverse chronological order. It is used to assist in troubleshooting problems.
Currently, when Predictive Support is installed on a Series 800 cluster, fault analysis and access to the Predictive Support user interface occur only on the server, not on clients.
FILES
/usr/diag/sw/sw program file
/usr/diag/pred/* data and program files /usr/diag/pred/predicta is a script for running Predictive (equivalent to /usr/diag/pred/psconfig run).
