NAME

xrw - Graphical user interface to HP Remote Watch programs and data.
HP Remote Watch is both a standalone product and a subsystem of
  HP Support Watch.

SYNOPSIS

/usr/bin/X11/xrw

DESCRIPTION

This program provides an OSF/Motif based graphical interface to HP Remote Watch data and programs.  You must have HP VUE on your system in order to run this program.  xrw is used to view configuration reports, view archived e-mail messages, collect current configuration data on HP-UX clusters or standalone HP-UX workstations, view LAN and disk statistics in both list and graphical format, view security reports, view system log file reports, view log file monitor reports, view core file check reports, and other miscellaneous information.  It can be used to adjust the customizable parameters of HP Remote Watch.  The program can run on any node in an HP-UX cluster or on a standalone system.  By default, the xrw program accesses the HP Remote Watch data and programs on the local cluster/standalone system.  It can also be set up to access HP Remote Watch on remote HP-UX clusters and standalone systems that are on the network by using the cluster/standalone map.  The program may also access a machine running HP Remote Watch across a modem connection.  See remotewatch(1M) for a complete description of HP Remote Watch.

STARTUP

The DISPLAY shell variable must be set to the correct setting.  Typically the correct setting is "<hostname>:0" where <hostname> is the name of the local workstation and 0 is the display number.  xrw is an X Window application.  It can be located on any HP-UX system on the network (including the local machine) and its output can be sent to the local workstation or X terminal display.  If xrw is running on a machine other than the local workstation, xhost(1) must be run on the local machine to give access permission to the remote machine.  See X documentation for further details.  To start xrw, type the following command in an hpterm window: /usr/bin/X11/xrw If /usr/bin/X11 is already in your search path, you can just type "xrw".  See sh(1), csh(1), or ksh(1) for instructions on setting your PATH variable (your search path).  When xrw is started, first a blank window is opened; this window is the display window.  The display window is used as the output screen for xrw.  After a short delay, a second window opens.  This window contains the icon map for describing the cluster or standalone workstation, as appropriate.  Together, these two windows give the appearance of a single window with the icon map occupying the upper portion of the window and the display screen, the lower portion.  The upper screen is also used to display the cluster/standalone map as described later.

MAIN DISPLAY

The icon map visually describes the configuration of a cluster or standalone system.  The configuration includes server and client nodes, disks, tape, CD-ROM, and printers.  In addition to the icon map, the display includes: the title bar of the HP OSF/Motif Window Manager, which displays the complete name and version of the program running on the local machine and copyright information; a main menu bar; and a status line, which shows the name of the displayed system (which is the system shown in the icon map and may be your system or a remote system), the HP-UX operating system version and the version of HP Remote Watch running on the system being accessed (which may be your system or a remote system), the date and time the map data was generated, and the connection mode between xrw and the displayed system.  In some cases, a workstation icon may contain an additional label with the words OLD DATA or NO DATA.  The OLD DATA label indicates that only old data is available for that node.  This occurs if the client node had been turned off during the night or if the client node was removed from the cluster without its HP Remote Watch files being removed. The NO DATA label will appear on a client workstation icon if HP Remote Watch has never run on the client node.  If this situation does not automatically clear itself up after a day, then a HP Remote Watch installation error on the client node is likely. When xrw is waiting for the response to a command, the cursor in the xrw screen changes into a little watch.  Until the watch turns back into a normal arrow cursor, other xrw commands should not be executed, unless you are running the customize function from the setup menu.  The main menu bar includes the menu items General, Collect, Reports, Archives, Statistics, Setup, Predictive, and Help.  All these menu items are present when the selected node is a Series 800 system.  (HP Remote Watch can access HP Remote Watch programs and data on a remote HP Support Watch for Series 800 running pre-9.0 versions of HP-UX).  Refer to the HP Support Watch for Series 800 User’s Guide for information on using the "Predictive" pull-down menu choices.)  The "Predictive" menu item does not appear in the menu bar when the selected node is a Series 300, 400 or 700 system. General Menu
The General pull-down menu performs most operations relating to the entire cluster or standalone system.  These operations include maintenance, and printing of icon maps, print logging, modem data communication, security system functions (file system access monitor and system security access), file system functions (log file monitor and core file check), and displaying boot messages for the selected server or client node.  Commands to clear the display window, display HP Remote Watch’s internal log file, set collect and monitor modes, and exit from xrw are also available in the General pull-down menu.  Collect Menu
This menu item includes a pull-down menu from which the user can obtain current configuration information on the spu, clients, disks, LAN, printers, kernel, and devices associated with the selected server or client.  The server is automatically selected when the map is first accessed; client nodes are selected by pointing to the desired node with the mouse cursor and pressing the left mouse button. Reports Menu
This menu item includes a pull-down menu from which the user can select and view configuration reports on the spu, clients, disks, LAN, printers, kernel, and devices associated with any node for any day during the configured report storage period. Archives Menu
This menu item permits viewing the stored e-mail messages, generated on any of the days in the configured period, for the selected node. Statistics Menu
This menu item permits viewing of the LAN and disk usage statistics, either in list or graphical format.  HP Remote Watch stores LAN usage statistics nightly (frame counts, unknown protocol errors, and so on).  Total LAN throughput in frames is also available in graph form.  HP Remote Watch also keeps statistics on the disk space usage per file system.  A graphical representation of disk usage is available.  Reports on the current disk usage for a single disk or all configured disks configured to the system are available. Setup Menu
This menu item includes a pull-down menu which permits the user to customize HP Remote Watch operational parameters interactively.  To run the customize portion of setup, the user must have superuser capability. Predictive Menu
This menu item is only displayed when the selected system is a Series 800. There are two submenu choices: Display Action Reports and Predictive Configuration For Series 800 computers, these items will be non-operational unless HP Support Watch for Series 800 is installed on the system.  In addition to the HP Remote Watch subsystem, HP Support Watch for Series 800 includes the Predictive Support subsystem. Help Menu
This menu item provides two levels of help.  The first type of help, Message Help, allows the user to obtain on-screen information regarding e-mailed or archived messages and appropriate actions to take on any of the HP Remote Watch messages.  The second type of help is Indexed Help to provide the user with help information pertaining to the current operation or associated window. Additionally, the dialog and list boxes displayed as a result of xrw operation include Help buttons to access help text pertinent to the displayed box.

CLUSTER/STANDALONE SYSTEM MAP

The xrw interface can be used to provide convenient access to multiple HP-UX clusters and standalone systems.  A cluster/standalone map must first be created using the Cluster/Standalone Map Functions selection of the General pull-down menu.  Once the map is created, xrw automatically displays the cluster/standalone map when started.  The cluster/standalone map contains an icon representing each of the HP-UX clusters and standalone systems entered on the map by the user.  Selecting one of the cluster or standalone icons brings up the icon map of the cluster or standalone.  A button is provided to return to the cluster/standalone map.  The cluster map configuration is stored in the file .xswMap in the user’s home directory.

REMOTE ACCESS

xrw may be used to access a machine running HP Remote Watch across a modem connection.  All information obtained in Network/daemons mode can be obtained in datacomm and serial modes.  When connected to the remote machine, log in to a non-superuser account.  The login: prompt appears in the display window; communication with the remote system is through the display window.  After completely logging in, select Load Icon Map in the Icon Map Functions menu of General.  All of the functionality of HP Remote Watch is available when logged onto remote systems.  To return to the local node, log off the remote system by entering "exit" at the remote system prompt, then bring up the DataComm Screen in the General pull-down menu.  Select Network/daemons to return to local operation.
