cleandev(8) cleandev(8)
NAME
cleandev - checks whether tape drives need to be cleaned
SYNOPSIS
cleandev
DESCRIPTION
cleandev checks whether the cleaning bit is set on tape drives that
support a cleaning bit. If the cleaning bit is set, a message is out-
put to the console, and with the help of the LOG3 logging systems, the
message is also written to a log file.
The console message is also output after each job for the relevant
tape drive.
If a message is displayed, the user must make sure that the drive is
cleaned.
Note: With some drives the cleaning bit is also set for other events
(e.g. if the number of load processes is exceeded for the tape
medium).
With the help of sysadm(1M), the log file can be searched for this
special entry.
If the cleaning bit is not set, nothing happens.
NOTES
If the cleaning bit is set, the following message appears on the con-
sole:
"sti:781: It's time to clean the drive iosX/stapeXXX".
This message is output by the operating system every time cleandev is
invoked and after every job for the tape drive where the cleaning bit
is set.
When the cleandev command is issued, the following message is output
in addition to the console message on the terminal from where cleandev
was called:
"It's time to clean the drive iosX/stapeXXX"
Along with the message text, the following entries are simultaneously
entered into the log file:
componentno. 1080008
structid 70
level WARNING
errorno. 100

The cleaning bit is supported by all 8mm EXABYTE, 4mm DAT, and by the
PXT1-B1 (A or 11) drives. The cleaning bit cannot be evaluated with
any other drives.
Please also note the following in relation to 8mm EXABYTE tape drives
(with the exception of MC75):
The cleaning bit is not supported for all types of tape drive and
therefore, cannot be evaluated in all cases.
You generally clean the device once you have been requested to do so,
and then reinsert the tape. If the cleaning message appears again
immediately (either via the cron routine or when you start the
cleandev command again), it may be because the tape was already loaded
more than 500 times. Poor operating conditions (e.g. dusty environ-
ment, start/stop mode) will reduce the cartridge lifetime to 30
operating cycles. Once you have saved the relevant data, you should no
longer use the tape. See also leaflet "How to use 8mm Data Recorders",
