modem(5) DG/UX 5.4R3.00 modem(5)

NAME
modem - overview of modems on the DG/UX system

DESCRIPTION
The DG/UX system supports asynchronous and synchronous modems. You
can use modems with AViiON servers and workstations.

Several options exist for modem usage. You can connect a terminal to
an AViiON computer via modem. You can run various software on a
modem. The following figure shows the layering:

       +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
       |RJE|3270|FTAM|X.400|X.500|VT|PAD| UUCP |TCP/IP|login|other|
       |--------|-------------------|-------------------|------|-----------|
       | SNA | OSI/P | XXX | TCP/IP | | SLIP | |
       | |-----------------------------------| |------| |
       | | X.25 | |
       |--------------------------------------------| |

The top two levels in the figure above are as follows:

RJE IBM Remote Job Entry facility
       3270 IBM 3270 terminal emulator
FTAM File Transfer, Access, and Management
X.400 A message transfer agent for an X.400 network
X.500 Directory services for Open System Interconnect (OSI)
               software
       VT Virtual Terminal
       PAD Packet Assembler Disassembler
UUCP A collection of communications programs including uucp(1)
       TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
login Logging in at an asynchronous terminal
other Unsupported software such as kermit, available on the
"Contributed Software for AViiON Systems" tape
       SNA IBM's System Network Architecture
OSI/P Open System Interconnect/Platform for AViiON Systems
       XXX X.3, X.28, and X.29 protocols
