NAME

x29login − X.29 host-based PAD

SYNOPSIS

x29login [flag ...] [dte-address]

FLAGS

The x29login flags can be divided into two classes, namely configuration flags and call flags.

Configuration flags allow the initial configuration of the PAD to be tailored.

Call flags allow parameters to be defined for use when making a call from the PAD.

Configuration Flags

-aThis flag requests that accounting statistics be displayed at the end of each call.

-b keyThis flag specifies the key to act as the PAD break key.  Pressing the PAD break key in Data-transfer Mode causes the PAD to take the action specified by PAD parameter 7.  The PAD break key can be set to any control character.

-cThis flag causes the PAD to enter PAD Command Mode upon invocation.  Any call flags specified on the command line are used as defaults if a call command is later issued, but no call is made upon invocation of the PAD.

-e keyThis flag specifies the key to act as the PAD escape key.  Pressing the PAD escape key in Data-transfer Mode returns control to PAD Command Mode.  If this flag is not specified, then the PAD escape key is <Ctrl/P> PAD escape key can be set to any control character.

-gThis flag starts the PAD in guarded mode, thus preventing escape to the Digital UNIX shell via the shell command.

-p profile
This flag specifies the PAD profile to load when the PAD is invoked.  The PAD parameters are set to the values given in the specified profile.  If this flag is not specified, the profile Default is loaded.  This profile can be found in /etc/x29localprof.

-s parameter:value,...
This flag allows one or more PAD parameters to be set.  The parameter settings supplied with the -s flag override those supplied in the profile specified with the -p flag.  Each parameter setting in the list should have the format parameter:value, where parameter is the reference number or name of the parameter and value is the value to be assigned to the parameter.  Parameter settings should be separated by commas.

Call Flags

-d dte-class
This flag specifies the DTE Class to use when making calls from the PAD.  If this flag is not specified, the DTE Class contained in the template is used.

-fThis flag requests that calls made from the PAD be fast-select calls.  Fast-select calls can have a maximum of 124 characters in the user data field.

-i idThis flag specifies the Network User Identification (NUI) to transmit when making calls from the PAD.  Typically, the NUI is used to identify the party to charge for the call.

-rThis flag requests reverse charging when making calls from the PAD.

-t template
This flag specifies the template to use when making calls from the PAD.  If this flag is not specified, then the template X29Login is used.

-u dataThis flag specifies the call user data to transmit when making calls from the PAD.  The maximum size of the string is 12 characters unless the -f flag is specified.  Typically, call user data is used by the remote DTE for login information.

DESCRIPTION

The x29login utility allows a user to connect to a remote system using an X.25 packet switching data network.  The x29login command provides the facilities required by a Packet Assembler/Disassembler (PAD) for remote terminal access as described by the X.3, X.28, and X.29 CCITT recommendations.

To specify the remote system to access, both a DTE Class and a Destination DTE Address must be specified.  The -d flag specifies which DTE  Class the outgoing call is to be made from; dte-address specifies the address of the remote DTE to call.  If either of these are not specified, then the values contained in the template are assumed.  If not specified with the -t flag, the default template X29Login is used.

The x29login utility returns control to the invoking process under the following two conditions:

•The exit command is issued when there is no call established.

•A call made directly from the x29login command line is cleared locally (via a clear command) or remotely (by logging out of the remote session).

For a more detailed description of this utility refer to the X.25 for Digital UNIX − PAD User’s Guide.

COMMANDS

PAD Command Mode is entered by specifying the -c flag on the Digital UNIX command line or by pressing the PAD escape key when in Data-transfer Mode.  The default PAD escape key is <Ctrl/P>

CCITT Commands

The CCITT recommendations define a set of commands that should be available from a PAD operating in PAD Command Mode:

breakThe break command sends a break signal to the local PAD.  Issuing the break command is equivalent to pressing the PAD break key in Data-transfer Mode.

callThe call command initiates a call to a remote DTE.

clear, clrThe clear command clears any call in progress.  If the host-based PAD was invoked in PAD Command Mode control is returned to PAD Command Mode, otherwise control is returned to the Digital UNIX shell.

helpThe help command allows information to be obtained about the X.25 for Digital UNIX host-based PAD.

iclear, iclrThe iclear command sends an invitation to clear signal to the remote PAD.  Upon receipt of the invitation to clear, the remote PAD clears the call in progress.

idThe id command sets the value of the ID attribute, which determines the Network User Identification (NUI) to transmit when making calls from the PAD.

idoffThe idoff command temporarily disables transmission of the Network User Identification (NUI) on calls from the PAD.

interrupt, intThe interrupt command sends an interrupt to the remote DTE.

parameter, par, par?, read
The parameter command displays the current values of the PAD parameters.

profile, profThe profile command loads a PAD profile from the PAD profile database.  The PAD parameters are set to the values given in the specified profile.

resetThe reset command resets the call.

setThe set command sets the values of PAD parameters.  See also the set command under the Extended Commands heading.

setread, set?The setread command sets and verifies the values of PAD parameters.

status, statThe status command displays the status of the PAD.  The PAD can be either free or engaged.

Extended Commands

In addition to the commands defined by the CCITT, the x29login utility offers a set of extended commands for manipulating PAD settings and performing other operations not supported by the CCITT commands:

captureThe capture command records all data transferred between the PAD and the remote DTE in the specified capture file.  If no file is specified, data transfer is captured to the file x29capture.txt in your home directory.  To complete data capture and close the capture file, issue the disable capture command.

disableThe disable command disables a PAD attribute.  The following PAD attributes can be disabled: accounting, break, capture, fast-select, id, reverse-charging, send, and user-data.  Where appropriate, a disabled PAD attribute can be re-enabled with its previous value by the enable command.

enableThe enable command enables a PAD attribute.  The following PAD attributes can be enabled: accounting, break, fast-select, id, reverse-charging, and user-data.  Enabling an attribute which had been previously disabled restores the previous value of the attribute.

exitThe exit command causes the PAD to leave PAD Command Mode.  If there is a call established control is returned to Data-transfer Mode, otherwise control is returned to the Digital UNIX shell.  Pressing <Ctrl/D> on an empty PAD command line has the same effect as entering the exit command.

sendThe send command transmits the specified file to the remote DTE.  To suspend file transmission and return to PAD Command Mode, press the PAD escape key.  File transmission can then be resumed by returning to Data-transfer Mode.  Alternatively, file transmission can be aborted by issuing the disable send command.

setThe set command sets the values of PAD attributes.  The following attributes can be set: break, class, dte, escape, id, prompt, template, and user-data.  See also the set command under the CCITT Commands heading.

shellThe shell command suspends the operation of the PAD and spawns a Digital UNIX shell to execute commands.  Control is returned to the PAD by logging out of the Digital UNIX shell.  Note that the shell command is not allowed if the PAD was started in guarded mode.

showThe show command displays the current values of PAD attributes.  The values of the following attributes can be displayed: accounting, break, capture, class, dte, escape, fast-select, id, prompt, reverse-charging, send, template, and user-data.  The show all command displays the values of all the PAD parameters.

PROFILES

A PAD profile is a named collection of PAD parameter settings.  PAD profiles are stored in a PAD profile database and are loaded by specifying the -p flag or by issuing the profile command.

The system PAD profile database is stored in /etc/x29localprof, but a private database can be specified by defining the X29LOCALPROF environment variable.

For more information on PAD profiles, see x29localprof(4X25).

NOTES

The PAD does not support call reselection, nor the following CCITT commands:

langSelect a language to converse in.

rpar?Read remote PAD parameters.

rset?Set and read remote PAD parameters.
