PKGTAPE(4-SysV) RISC/os Reference Manual PKGTAPE(4-SysV)
NAME
pkgtape - MIPS software distribution tape layout
DESCRIPTION
This manual page describes the layout of MIPS software dis-
tribution tapes.
There are two major variations: OS (RISC/os) releases, and
non-OS releases. OS releases have two additional files on
the first tape in a release set.
For distributions which contain multiple tapes, there are
also differences between the first tape in a distribution
and the others.
The first tape in a distribution is layed out as follows:
OS packages (RISC/os)-
id instd tapevol miniroot archive ...
non-OS packages-
id instd archive ...
Any additional tapes are laid out as follows:
id archive ...
id is a text file containing:
packagename version volumenumber
id is used to verify that the installer has mounted the
requested tape when prompted to change tapes.
instd is the standard packaging information and tools direc-
tory for the release. It is a tar archive, containing the
pkginfo file, bomfiles and installation tools for the pack-
age. Note that this directory is also present on OS
releases; this provides for later reinstallation of subpack-
ages from the release without having to load and boot the
miniroot.
tapevol is the bootable tape file containing standalone
binaries for the disk formatter and sash.
miniroot is the miniroot filesystem, used for installation
of scratch OS installs, and any OS install of the root file
system.
archive is the archive file for one of the subpackages in
the package. Presently the packaging/install tools assume
this to be a tar archive.
