X(8X10) COMMAND REFERENCE X(8X10) NAME X - X window system server For 4310, 4320, and 4330 series UTek products only. SYNOPSIS X <display> [ option ... ] <tty> DESCRIPTION The program X is the window system server normally run automatically by xsystem(8x10), providing the tty argument. The display argument is the number of the bitmap display to service. The number is typically in the range 0-6, and defines the ports the server will accept connections on and the filename of the device. (The UTek workstations use 0 as the display argument.) The program xinit(1x10) is usually used to start X interactively. Connections through the UTek domain and through TCP are currently possible. The connections accepted by a server depend on how it was compiled. UTek domain connections are through /tmp/X*, where * is the display number; TCP connections are through ports 5800+N (VAX byte order) and 5900+N (68000 byte order), where N is the display number. OPTIONS The following options can be given to the X server on the command line: -a # set mouse acceleration (pixels) -f # set feep (bell) volume (0-7) m force monochrome mode on a color display -p # set screen-saver pattern cycle time (minutes) -r turn off autorepeat r turn on autorepeat -s # set screen-saver timeout (minutes) -t # set mouse threshold (pixels) v set video-on screen-saver preference -v set video-off screen-saver preference -0 color set color map entry 0 (BlackPixel) Printed 4/6/89 1
X(8X10) COMMAND REFERENCE X(8X10) -1 color set color map entry 1 (WhitePixel) -D rgbdb set RGB (red, green, blue) data base file The defaults are -a 4 c 6 -f 3 l -p 60 r -s 10 -t 2 -0 #008 -1 #ffffff -D /usr/lib/rgb INITIALIZATION The programs X(1x10) and your first xterm(1x10) are normally started by the xsystem(8x10) program; then X maintains an access control list for accepting connections. (The host where the server runs is initially on the list.) Hosts listed in the file /etc/X*.hosts, where * is the display number, are also initially on the list; the format of this file is a list of host names, one per line. The access control list can be manipulated with xhost(1x10). The program xsystem(8x10) restarts the X server if the display terminates. See the xsystem(8x10) description on how to terminate X. Note that while X is running, all access to the display must be through the window system. DIAGNOSTICS If run from xsystem(8x10), X errors are logged in the file /usr/adm/X*msgs, where * is the display number. Otherwise, errors go to error output. The message Fatal error: No such device or address at Opening usually means something else (like an existing X ) has the display open. The message Fatal error: No such file or directory at Initializing usually means that the device file for the display does not exist. FILES /etc/X*.hosts Initial access control list /tmp/X* UTek domain socket (if configured) /usr/adm/X*msgs Error log file /dev/xdev X display device /etc/X X server executable Printed 4/6/89 2
