RC(8) COMMAND REFERENCE RC(8) NAME rc - command script for auto-startup and auto-shutdown SYNOPSIS /etc/rc /etc/rc.local DESCRIPTION The command script rc determines automatic startup and rc.local is the script holding commands which are pertinent only to a specific site. The command rc.local is invoked as part of the execution of rc. When multi-user mode is selected, either during normal UTek power-up or when single-user mode is terminated, init(8) invokes rc. If a file system consistency check was run the last time the workstation was turned off (only occurs on machines with a ``soft'' power switch), the file system check will not be run. If a file system consistency check needs to be run, rc runs fsck(8) with option -p to ``preen'' all the disks of minor inconsistencies resulting from the last system shutdown and to check for serious inconsistencies caused by hardware or software failure. If this disk check and repair succeeds, then the second part of rc is run. If fsck(8) finds a problem, either the system will be rebooted, or single-user mode will be started, depending on problem severity. This second part of rc, which is run after file checking succeeds, starts the standard daemons on the system and performs other housekeeping tasks such as preserving editor files and clearing scratch directories (e.g., /tmp). The rc command script invokes mount(8) and swapon(8) with the -a option, thereby using fstab(5) to determine what file systems are to be mounted and what partitions are to be used for paging; rc.local and rc.net(8n) are then executed. FILES /fastboot indicates whether fsck(8) should be run CAVEATS Only machines with a "soft" power switch will run fsck(8) as part of a power-down sequence. SEE ALSO fstab(5), fsck(8), init(8), rc.net(8n), and shutdown(8). Printed 4/6/89 1
