COMM(4) COMMAND REFERENCE COMM(4) NAME comm - serial port driver for UTek workstations For 4310 series UTek products only. DESCRIPTION Comm is the driver on the UTek workstation that provides a terminal interface, as described in tty(4), on the RS-232-C connector. The RS-232-C interface on a UTek workstation is a male connector implementing a Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) interface. The following pins are connected: Pin Dir Name Description Comment _______________________________________________________________________________ 1 PGND Protective GrouND tied to pin 7 2 out TxD Transmitted Data 3 in RxD Received Data 4 out RTS Request To Send asserted when open 5 in CTS Clear To Send hangup if not on 6 in DSR Data Set Ready not used 7 SGND Signal GrouND tied to pin 1 8 in DCD Data Carrier Detect not used 11 out sRTS secondary Request To Send not used 12 in sDCD secondary Data Carrier Detect not used 15 in TxC Transmit Clock not used 17 in RxC Receive Clock not used 19 out sRTS secondary Request To Send not used 20 out DTR Data Terminal Ready asserted when open The five pins listed as not used are mentioned because some equipment may be sensitive to loads or signals on those pins. The description sRTS is normally connected to pin 19, although a jumper on the board may connect it instead to pin 11. Pin 11 is otherwise not connected. The remaining pins are used in their conventional sense. When /dev/tty00 is closed, RTS and DTR are off. When it is opened, RTS and DTR are turned on. The open will then wait until CTS is asserted. Once CTS is asserted, normal terminal operation proceeds until the device is closed or CTS is dropped. The close will drop RTS and DTR. If CTS is dropped, the signals SIGHUP and SIGCONT are sent to the process group. In order to connect a terminal or printer to the comm port a null modem adapter must be used.
