XENV(1X11) COMMAND REFERENCE XENV(1X11) NAME xenv - initialize X window environment SYNOPSIS xenv [ -f ] [ -s file ] [ -rhost ] This is a supported client. DESCRIPTION This command allows users to have their X window environment automatically initialized on first entry to the window system, i.e. when xterm(1x11) is started by invoking xsystem(8x11), or when they log into a login xterm window. This command should be invoked from the user's shell initialization file (.login if csh(1) is used, .profile if sh(1) is used.) The xenv command looks for the specified program using the user's search path and runs the program if found. If no program was specified, xusersetup(1x11) is used. To insure that the user's setup program is only run once per X session, xsystem(8x11) creates a lock file in /tmp that is found and removed by xenv. The DISPLAY environment variable must be set prior to invoking xenv in order to match the proper lock file unless the -f option is used. The xenv command will remove the lock file from the /tmp directory to prevent the window environment from being initialized more than once per X session. A system default user setup script is provided in /usr/lib/X11/bin/xusersetup (with a symbolic link from /bin/xusersetup). OPTIONS -f Force xenv to initialize X window environment. Any lock file is ignored. -s file Specify file as the setup program rather than the default xusersetup. -rhost Display the remote host you login from. ENVIRONMENT DISPLAY To get default host and display number. SEE ALSO csh(1csh), sh(1sh), xsystem(8x11), and xinit(1x11). Printed 3/22/89 1
