IDENT(1RCS) COMMAND REFERENCE IDENT(1RCS) NAME ident - identify files SYNOPSIS ident [ -k list ] [ -n number ] filename ... DESCRIPTION Ident searches the named files for all occurrences of the pattern $keyword:...$, where keyword is one of: Author Date Header Locker Log Revision Source State These patterns are normally inserted automatically by the RCS command co(1rcs), but can also be inserted manually. Ident works on text files as well as object files. OPTIONS -k list Search only for the keywords in list. The keywords in list must be separated by commas. -n number Stop searching the input file when number keywords have been found. EXAMPLES If the C program in file f.c contains: char rcsid[] = "$Header: Header information $"; and f.c is compiled into f.o, then the command: ident f.c f.o will print: f.c: $Header: Header information $ f.o: $Header: Header information $ RETURN VALUE [NO_ERRS] Command completed without error. IDENT(1RCS) COMMAND REFERENCE IDENT(1RCS) [USAGE] Incorrect command line syntax. Execution terminated. [NP_WARN] An error warranting a warning message occurred. Execution continues. [P_WARN] A system error occurred. Execution continues. See intro(2) for more information on system errors. CAVEATS The maximum number of revisions that can be stored in a single RCS file is 719. When there are more than 700 revisions in a file, a warning message is printed on the terminal (if possible) every time an RCS command works on the file.
