MSGHLP(1) COMMAND REFERENCE MSGHLP(1) NAME msghlp, sccshelp - ask for help about error messages SYNOPSIS msghlp args sccshelp args DESCRIPTION Msghlp finds information to explain a message from a command or explain the use of a command. One or more arguments may be supplied. The arguments may be either message numbers (which normally appear in parentheses following messages) or command names, or one of the following types: type 1 Begins with non-numerics, ends in numerics. The non-numeric prefix is usually an abbreviation for the program or set of routines which produced the message (e.g., sys13, for message 13 from the sys command). The file /usr/lib/errtags/helploc will be checked for a file corresponding to the non numeric prefix. That file will then be searched for the message. If /usr/lib/errtags/helploc does not exist or the prefix is not found there the search will be attempted on /usr/lib/errtags/<non-numeric prefix>, (e.g, /usr/lib/errtags/zz ), with the search key being <remainder of arg>, (e.g., 32). type 2 Does not contain numerics (as a command, such as get) The file /usr/lib/errtags/cmds is searched, with the search key being the whole argument. type 3 Is all numeric (e.g., 212), or if the file as determined above does not exist, the search will be attempted on /usr/lib/errtags/default with the search key being the entire argument. The response of the program will be the explanatory information related to the argument, if there is any. FILES /usr/lib/errtags directory containing files of message text. /usr/lib/errtags/<non-numeric prefix> the file searched if the message is not found in /usr/lib/errtags/helploc. /usr/lib/errtags/default the file searched if the argument is all numeric. Printed 4/6/89 1
MSGHLP(1) COMMAND REFERENCE MSGHLP(1) /usr/lib/errtags/helploc the file searched if the argument has a non-numeric prefix. /usr/lib/errtags/cmds contains the syntax lines for the commands.
