PASSWD(1) COMMAND REFERENCE PASSWD(1)

NAME
     passwd - change login password

SYNOPSIS
     passwd [ -f filename ] [ userid]

DESCRIPTION
This command changes (or installs) a password associated
with the user userid (your own user name by default).

The program prompts for the old password and then prompts
for the new password; the caller must supply both. The new
password must be typed twice, to forestall mistakes.

New passwords must be at least four characters long if they
use a sufficiently rich alphabet and at least six characters
long if monocase; at least one non-numeric character is
required. These rules are relaxed if you are insistent
     enough.

Only the owner of the name or the superuser may change a
password; the owner must prove he or she knows the old
     password.

Use yppasswd to change your password in the network Yellow
Pages; this will not affect your local password, or your
password on any remote machines on which you have accounts.

OPTIONS
     -ffilename
Treat file as the password file.

EXAMPLES
To change your own password, execute the command passwd with
no arguments. You will be prompted for all required
     information.
