LAN(4N)                 COMMAND REFERENCE                 LAN(4N)

NAME
     lan - local area network interface

DESCRIPTION
     The LAN interface provides access to a 10Mb/s IEEE 802.3
     (Ethernet) network on UTek system workstations.

     At boot time the interface's IEEE 802.3 address is
     initialized from information stored in the on-board non-
     volatile RAM, while the Internet address is set via the
     netconfig utility either from information stored in the
     configuration file /etc/network.conf or through operator
     interaction. The Internet address may subsequently be
     changed with an SIOCSIFADDR ioctl using address family
     AF_INET; however, this change is temporary and will only
     remain in effect until it is changed again or until the
     system is rebooted. The Ethernet address should not be
     changed.

     The LAN interface employs the address resolution protocol
     described in arp(4n) to dynamically map between Internet and
     Ethernet addresses on the local network.

     Using an ifreq structure (see intro(4n)), interface
     parameters may be read or written via the ioctl system call.
     The SIOCGNVRAM ioctl retrieves the IEEE 802.3 address stored
     in the interface non-volatile RAM.

     A Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) measurement can be made
     with the SIOCTDR ioctl. The return value has the following
     form:

          struct tdr {
                 unsigned short tdr_okay : 1,  /* link okay */
                                         : 5,  /* **not used** */
                                tdr_time : 10; /* reflection time */
                                               /* (in 100-nsec ticks) */

          };

DIAGNOSTICS
     lan0: can't handle af%d. The interface was handed a message
     with addresses formatted in an unsuitable address family;
     the packet was dropped.
