TOPSD(8C) — MAINTENANCE COMMANDS
NAME
topsd − TOPS AppleTalk network file system
SYNOPSIS
/usr/tops/topsd [-who] [-last] [ server-name ] [ debug-level ]
DESCRIPTION
topsd is the TOPS network file system server. It uses the TOPS protocol to service file system requests from remote clients.
The tops servers advertise their services with AppleTalk Name Binding Protocol using the UNIX hostname, or server-name if specified. Each TOPS server name must be unique within the AppleTalk zone. A server name may contain blanks, but it must then be quoted in the shell invocation.
The TOPS daemon relies on the HFS service for it’s proper operation. The rpc.hfsd daemon must be running.
Volumes that make up the server’s root directory as seen from the TOPS desk accessory on the Macintosh are stored in the file /usr/tops/published. Volumes may be published and unpublished with the command publish(8C) and its alias unpublish.
The boot time invocation of the servers normally resides in the file /etc/rc.local.
TOPS creates a shadow subdirectory .rsrc in each accessed directory to store TOPS file status information and Macintosh resource forks.
The file /usr/tops/desk, the prototype desktop file is used to seed the Macintosh finder DeskTop file.
