ICONEDIT(1)  —  USER COMMANDS

NAME

iconedit − create and edit images for OpenWindows icons, cursors and panel items

SYNOPSIS

iconedit [ filename ]

OPTIONS

iconedit accepts the standard XView command-line arguments.

AVAILABILITY

Although this command is available with both the SunView software installation option and the OpenWindows user environment, its appearance is not the same for both environments.  The man page you are currently viewing refers to the iconedit that is available with OpenWindows.  The primary difference between this and the SunView iconedit is the user interface.  All OpenWindows standard tools use the OPEN LOOK Graphical User Interface. For more information about OPEN LOOK, refer to the OpenWindows User’s Guide.  For information about installing OpenWindows, refer to the OpenWindows Installation and Start-Up Guide.  For information about the XView command-line arguments see the XView Reference Manual.

DESCRIPTION

iconedit is part of the OpenWindows Desk Set provided with the XView environment.  It requries the pixrect library for its operation.  With iconedit you can create and edit small images for use in icons, cursors, panel items, etc.  iconedit has several subwindows, three of which are visible at startup:

The Main Window which contains the drawing area (or canvas) together with the command panel and the message area underneath the canvas.

A Proof Window for previewing a life-size version of the image being edited.  This window has six gray shades for setting the proof window background (click the left or middle mouse button on the desired shade to load it) and four raster operations used when rendering the proof image.  The source for the raster operstion is the proof image and the destination is the proof background.  This feature is especially useful when editing cursor images because you can test the cursor’s appearance against different backgrounds and with different raster operations.

A Draw Window showing the options available for drawing and their current state (see below).

Inside the canvas, use the left mouse button to draw in black and the middle mouse button to draw in white (erase).  As you draw, an enlarged version of the image appears in the canvas while a life size version of the image appears in the proof window. From the control panel, you have the following pull-down menus:

File menu

Brings up a command panel which contains a Directory field and a File field. For file name completion, you can type the first letter(s) of the file name and type ESC and iconedit will try to match the letters you have typed from the file names in the directory specified.  Specify the file(s) you want for any of the following operations.

Load loads in the file named in the Directory and File fields.  Choose the raster operation to load it with: Src overwrites your canvas, Or loads the union of the current image in your canvas and the file to be loaded, And load sthe intersection of both images and Xor performs the xor operation between current image and the image in the file to be loaded.  If you are not sure of the file name, use a regular expression for the File field, leave it blank, and it switchs to a Browse when you press Load.  If you already have an image in the canvas, it asks for confirmation before loading.  You can also load a file by dragging the file icon from File Manager and dropping it into iconedit.

Save saves your current image in the file specified in the Directory and File fields. If the file exists, iconedit asks for confirmation before overwriting

Browse searches the directory specified in the Directory: field for image files with names matching the regular expression in the File field. If the File field is empty, it assumes the regular expression ∗ (search all files).  If images are found, they are displayed in a popup, scrollable window for browsing.  If no images are found, iconedit will report so in the menu area.  From the browse window you can load an image by selecting it with the left and middle mouse buttons. The Load operation will take into account the current load operation specified in the popup.  You can find an image’s file name by pressing the right mouse button on the image.

View menu has the following options:

Grid turns a grid on or off in the display area.  One grid square is a 4x4 area of pixels.

Size changes the size of the canvas. Four sizes are offered: 64x64 (icon size); 48x48; 32x32; and 16x16 (cursor size). When you switch to a smaller size, the rest of the canvas is hidden but not lost.  Editing operations, however, will only affect the visible portion of the canvas.  Saving will save only the visible portion of the image.

Proof opens the proof window for previewing a life-size version of the image being edited. Six varying gray shades are available for filling the background. These gray shades can be loaded with any of four raster operations.  These operations are performed between the gray shade specified for the proof background and the proof image.

Edit menu allows you to choose from the following options:

Draw displays the drawing window showing the drawing options. The options are shown as graphical representations.  To draw in black, use the left mouse button; to draw in white (erase), use the middle mouse button. Options to the Draw selection are:

Dot paints a single dot at a time.

Line draws a line. Point to the first endpoint, press and hold the left (or middle) button, drag to another endpoint and release the button to draw the line.

Rectangle draws a rectangle. Press the mouse button (left or middle) at one corner of the desired rectangle; drag to the opposite corner and release. For different rectangle shades, press the left mouse button on the rectangle icon to cycle through available shades, or press Options and bring up the menu behind the menu button.

Circle draws a circle.  Press the mouse button at the center, drag to the edge and release the mouse button.  For different shades, press left mouse on the circle icon to cycle through available shades or press Options and bring up the menu behind the menu button.

Text writes text on the image.  Make the text field active by selecting the abc field, then type the desired text. Once you move the cursor onto the canvas, a box appears.  Position the box where the text is desired and release the mouse button. To switch fonts, press the left mouse button on the abc icon to cycle through the available fonts, or choose options and bring up the submenu behind the menu button.

Region When selected, the Move menu comes up with eight different ways of moving the region. Select the desired rectangular region by pressing the left (or middle) mouse button at one corner, drag it to the opposite corner, and release. A band box shows you the selection.  After specifying the region, choose the move operation desired.

Move brings up the move menu, showing eight arrows indicating ways of moving your image. If you have selected region from the draw menu, only the specified region is affected by the move operation.  If region is not selected, the entire image is moved.

Invert Invert all pixels on the canvas. Toggles from off to on.

Clear Clears the canvas.

Undo Undoes the last operation. Restores the canvas to the state it was in before the last Edit operation. A second Undo undoes the previous Undo.

Background Brings up a menu of shades and operations.  Choose the background shade frofm among six gray shades, choose the raster operation to be performed between the gray shade and the current image on the canvas, press Fill Background to fill your canvas.  The source for the raster operation is the fill pattern (gray shade) and the destination is the canvas.
