NESTOP(8)  —  MAINTENANCE COMMANDS

NAME

nestop − Sun Network CoProcessor Failure Trigger

SYNOPSIS

nestop device

AVAILABILITY

This command is available from the Sun Network CoProcessor (NC) software distribution. This command is specific to this product.  For information about installing the NC software distribution, refer to the Network CoProcessor Installation Manual.

DESCRIPTION

nestop triggers a software failure on the Network CoProcessor specified by the device argument. This argument may be expressed in one of the following two forms: /dev/ne0 or ne0.  Up to six Network CoProcessor interfaces may be installed depending on the configuration of the system. Device names range from ne0 to ne5.

nestop is used in conjunction with the newatch program in the following fashion. In normal operation, the Network CoProcessor regularly sends statistical information on network activity to the host system.  The statistical updates occur at one second intervals.  When the newatch program is running on the system, it monitors these updates, viewing them as the “heartbeat” of the Network CoProcessor board.  If newatch fails to detect the board “heartbeat” for ten consecutive seconds, it considers the Network CoProcessor to be in a failure condition.  newatch then uploads the memory contents of the Protocol Processor board, and invokes a reload and restart script or optionally leaves the board in a non-functional reset state.  The effect of the nestop program is to halt normal software execution on the CPU of the Network CoProcessor interface. If an newatch process for this Network CoProcessor interface is running on the system, the nestop command in effect triggers an upload of the memory contents. Furthermore, if a reload script exists for the stopped Network CoProcessor, a reload and restart operation takes place.
