NAME
smon - System Monitor; performs instance recovery

SYNOPSIS
     smon

DESCRIPTION
The System Monitor or smon background process, described in
the ORACLE Database Administrator's Guide, is used to per-
form instance recovery. It is used at instance startup and
performs recovery for failed CPUs in shared disk systems.
The smon process is also responsible for cleaning up tem-
porary segments that are no longer used, and for recovering
dead transactions skipped during crash and instance recovery
because of file-read or offline errors. It recovers these
transactions when the tablespace or file is brought back
online. The System Monitor process "wakes up" regularly to
check whether it is needed, and can be called if another
     process needs it.
