PASSWORDS(5A) FILE FORMATS PASSWORDS(5A)
NAME
passwords - Aviator passwords file
SYNOPSIS
/usr/games/aviator/passwords
DESCRIPTION
The Aviator password file contains the passwords which are needed to
use all the capabilities of the flight simulator Aviator. The file
contains entries for Aviator, the Aviator Terrain Library, and the
Aviator Graphics Interface. You can purchase passwords for these
programs from your local distributor, or please contact Artificial
Horizons directly at "ahi-interest@ahi.com". The passwords should be
placed in the passwords file.
Each password is made up of numbers and upper or lower cased
characters. Only one password is allowed per line. Comments begin
with the '#' character as the first character of the line or can be
placed following the password if started by the '#' characters. White
spaces in passwords are ignored.
Aviator uses a floating password security system, which enables other
users to run Aviator when the owner is not running it. The owner can
share the password with others by allowing access (via NFS) to the
directory that the passwords file is located. The password allocation
is done on a first come, first serve basis. If the owner does not
want to share his password, so that he may run Aviator at any time, he
should prevent others from mounting his system by changing the
/etc/exports file.
Single passwords for Aviator can now be ordered that are locked to a
specific workstation instead of floating. This allows the password
file and directory to be copied and backed up, but this password can
not be shared when not in use.
ENVIRONMENT
The environment variable AVIATOR_PASSWORDS is used to point to the
file passwords, if it is not in the aviator directory. The
environment variable AVIATOR_PASSWORDS is also used by Aviator Terrain
Library and Aviator Graphics Interface.
EXAMPLE
The following is a sample of four passwords:
tgma 8rlv vmu # Curtis' Aviator password
1rts rqae fgm # Bruce's Aviator password

WARNING
The passwords file with a floating password should never be deleted,
copied, or moved or else your passwords will no longer work and you
will have to buy new ones. The home aviator directory should never be
deleted nor should its permissions ever be changed from 555.
