NAME

dtpower − desk−top power manager, system and device power management tool

SYNOPSIS

dtpower [ generic−tool−arguments ] [ −sampleTime n | −st n ]
        [ −nobell ]

AVAILABILITY

SUNWpmowu

DESCRIPTION

dtpower provides a graphical user interface (GUI) to the power management system.  dtpower allows the user to view the current power management state including the time period a device can be inactive before being power managed by the system and automatic shutdown (autoshutdown) parameters.  For platforms with automatic wakeup capability, dtpower indicates if this feature is enabled or not.  dtpower may also be used by the superuser to configure device power management parameters.  See pm(7D) and powerd(1M) for more information.

The set of power configurations for all devices and the system is stored in the file power.conf(4).

When the X-window system is running, setting "Screen Saver" in the corresponding windowing system controls the power management of display(s).  In  CDE,  the  Style Manager controls the "Screen Saver".  Enabling only the "Blank Screen" option of the "Screen Saver" causes the display(s) to be power managed.  In OpenWindows, the "Screen Saver" can be enabled through the Workspace Properties menu. When  there is no X-window system running, display power management is controlled by parameters stored in the power.conf(4) file.

For systems that use a battery, dtpower also displays battery information when dtpower is iconic.  Instead of the regular icon, a battery is shown with a level of charge proportional to the current battery charge.  If the battery is discharging, the estimated time remaining is displayed as a title line in the icon.  If the battery is charging, the title line reads "charging".

OPTIONS

generic−tool−arguments
dtpower accepts the generic tool arguments described in xview(7).

−sampleTime n
or

−st n This option sets the interval (in seconds) between battery checks, when a battery is present.  The default is 5 seconds.

−nobell
This option disables the bell.  The default is to sound the bell whenever a warning dialog is displayed.

USAGE

dtpower operates using a set of sliders and buttons in a control panel.

Devices

Disk Slider

If present, this slider shows the amount of time the disk will be idle before spinning down.  This is not available on all platforms.  The disk will automatically spin up the next time it is needed.

System

This panel allows the user to view and edit the parameters governing autoshutdown.  Autoshutdown will only occur when idleness conditions are met between the start and finish times.  If a system is capable of autowakeup, then when autowakeup is enable on this panel, the system will resume automatically at the specified finish time.  Otherwise, the system must be manually resumed (see cpr(7)).

Start

The start time may be typed into the text field or selected from the pulldown menu.

Finish

The finish time is set in a similar fashion to the start time.  There is also an option in the pulldown menu to set "All Day".  This option sets the finish time to the same value as the start time; in this case, autoshutdown will occur at any time of day that idleness conditions are met.

Suspend Slider

This slider sets the minimum system idle time before the system can be automatically shut down.  Automatic shutdown will only occur in the time period specified by "Start" and "Finish".

Autowakeup

Systems with automatic wakeup capability will have a selection box to enable/disable this feature.  Autowakeup will only happen as a result of an earlier autoshutdown.  If autowakeup is enabled, the system will wake up and resume at the time specified as the finish time.

Buttons

Apply

Applies all changes made to the power management settings within the window and stores them in the configuration file. These settings will also be used the next time the system is booted.

Reset

Resets all the settings to what they were at the last Apply or tool invocation.  If you have pressed Apply during this session, Reset will not return values to any previous setting other than those most recently applied.

Quit

Quits the application.  If there are pending changes, you will be prompted to apply or discard them before exiting.

Help

Displays a brief overview of the dtpower application.
