YPPRINTCAP(5) — FILE FORMATS
NAME
ypprintcap - YP printer capability data base
SYNOPSIS
/etc/ypprintcap
AVAILABILITY
Sun386i systems only.
DESCRIPTION
This is the text file used to create the YP printcap map on the Sun386i, so that you can centralize and simplify printer administration. It has the same format as the /etc/printcap file described in printcap(5).
The text file for the YP printcap map is stored in /etc/printcap file on the YP master of a YP domain. Other systems in a domain (besides the YP master) can also have a local /etc/printcap file. Programs such as lpr(1) first access the local file, then the YP map. The local /etc/printcap file on a machine can be used to specify printers that are not available on a network-wide basis.
This strategy implies that the YP master cannot use the local /etc/printcap file to specify printers that are to be known only to the local system. This is because the local /etc/printcap file on the YP master is the actual text file used to create the YP printcap map. The Sun386i solves this by allowing the /etc/printcap file on the YP master to be used locally, and using /etc/ypprintcap as the text file used for creating the YP printcap map. This also allows re-creation of /etc/ypprintcap on each slave server so it can more easily become a master.
