NAME

e3E − 3COM 3C5x9 Ethernet adapter (Etherlink III)

DESCRIPTION

The e3E driver provides STREAMS access to the 3COM 3C5x9 family.  3C509 is an ISA board; 3C579 is an EISA board; 3C589 is a PCMCIA board.  The 3C5x9 is a high performance Ethernet interface board which uses programmed I/O to transfer data.  It has two FIFOs of 2K in depth for transmit and receive.  3C5x9 is positioned to use in client machines where a fast and dedicated CPU would better utilize this Ethernet board.

Configuration

The space.c file provides a mechanism to specify the 3C5x9 board operating parameters to the driver.  The parameters that you may change are board type, machine bus type, and transceiver type.  I/O addresses and interrupt value are in the sdevice file.  3C5x9 doesn’t have shared memory address space.

DIAGNOSTICS

When you see "3COM Etherlink III board present", you have configured the board correctly.  If not, check the following items:

1) Verify /etc/conf/pack.d/e3E0/space.c for machine type, transceiver type (BNC or AUI), and board type (ISA, MCA, EISA).

2) Verify /etc/conf/sdevice.d/e3E0 for I/O addresses and interrupt value.

3) Verify /etc/conf/cf.d/mdevice for proper e3E0 entry.

4) Verify /etc/netd.cf for e3E0 entries.

5) Verify your host name, "uname",  is in /etc/hosts.

6) Run manufacturer-provided 3c509.exe or EISA configuration utility.
