NAME

snmpset − SNMP network alteration application

SYNOPSIS

snmpset [-c community_name] agent [variable value]∗

DESCRIPTION

snmpset is a network alteration application that allows users to change the value(s) of SNMP variable(s) managed by the Internet management agent agent running the Simple Network Management Protocol.  When snmpset is invoked from the command line, it queries the agent agent the value of all the variables user has specified to make sure they all exist.  If they all do exist, the application prints out all the variables’ names and values.  It then asks if the user really wants to change the values of the variables. If the answer is ’no’, the application stops. Otherwise, it sends off one set request and waits for the response. If wrong number of variables is returned in response, the alteration fails.  Or upon successful return, it send another get request to query the same variables and print out their names and values once more.  Variables whose values are to be queried for must begin with ’_mgmt_mib’: for example, to query for the variable ’_iso_org_dod_internet_mgmt_mib_system_sysDescr_0’, use the abbreviation ’_mgmt_mib_system_sysDescr_0’.

BUGS

Currently /etc/snmpd can not support all writeable variables.

FILES

/etc/snmp.variablesdefault variable initfile
