RARPD(8) — NEWS-OS Programmer’s Manual
NAME
rarpd − DARPA Reverse Address Resolution Protocol service
SYNOPSIS
/etc/rarpd
DESCRIPTION
Rarpd is a protocol to get a machine’s IP address (32bit) from its Ethernet address (48bit) at boot time. In order to answer the reverse-arp request, a machine’s name-to-IP-address list must be in /etc/hosts file, and its name-to-Ethernet-address list must be in /etc/ethers file.
The reverse-arp server starts a daemon that responds to these requests. The server that runs the rarpd daemon must be in both /etc/hosts file and /etc/ethers file.
If the server machine is using the NIS(Network Information Service), the server’s files are ignored, and the appropriate NIS maps queried.
