SFEP(1)  —  NEWS-OS Programmer’s Manual

NAME

SFEP − European language input front end processor

SYNOPSIS

sfep [ −f shell ] [ −h ] [ −L ] [ −e program [ arguments ...]]

DESCRIPTION

sfep is a front end processor which employs ISO 8859-1 codes to allow input in European languages such as German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Finnish, Dutch and Norwegian using ASCII keyboards such as the NEWS keyboard.

sfep is started from the terminal and uses the compose key to convert input from the terminal into the desired characters. The converted results are then passed to the application running on top of sfep.

OPTIONS

−f shell
This specifies the shall to be used when sfep is started. The default is /bin/csh.

−h Displays all options; does not run sfep.

−L This option indicates that the activated shell should be used as a og-in shell.

−e program [arguments ...]
This option is used to specify the program to be loaded after sfep is started and its arguments. This must be the last option entered on the command line.

INPUT METHOD

sfep allows characters to be entered using the compose key method.  For example, the Small German Letter SHARP s (0xdf) is entered by pressing "compose key" + "s" + "s". On NEWS keyboard the compose key is generally the key immediately to the right of the spacebar.  The keys used to “compose” each character are listed in the tables on the following pages.  On the NEWS European keyboard, ’ (Quotation) in the table should be replaced with an acute accent, ‘ (Back Quotation) with a grave accent and " (Double Quotation) with a dieresis.
