NAME

a3sjlbp − Printing using laser beam printer functions

SYNOPSIS

a3sjlbp [ options ] [ lpr_options ] [ name ...  ]

DESCRIPTION

The command a3sjlbp is used when printing using a laser beam printer (NWP-533/537/543) to select printer functions such as paper size, manual paper feed, dual-sided printing, etc.

It works with the following printer filters supplied with NEWS-OS Release 4.0.

/usr/sony/lib/lpf_smlbp For plain text output
/usr/sony/lib/lpf_lbpnfFor ditroff output
/usr/sony/lib/lpf_xwdlbpFor X window dump output
/usr/sony/lib/lpf_lbpifFor CDFF output
/usr/sony/lib/lpf_lbp8emLBP−8 emulator

The options described below consist, first, of options which specify laser beam printer functions. These are followed by options for the lpr command under the designation lpr_options.

The following options can be specified.

−size size
Specifies the size and orientation of the surface to be printed.
Any of the following can be specified for size.

NWP-533A4P (portrait), A4L (landscape)
NWP-537A4P, B4P (portrait), A4L, B4L (landscape)
NWP-543A3P, A4P, B4P, B5P (portrait),
A3L, A4L, B4L, B5L (landscape)

The available paper sizes are A3, A4, B4 and B5. The paper orientation options are L (landscape) and P (portrait).
If the desired orientation is portrait it is not necessary to specify P. (In other words, A4 and A4P are interpreted in the same way.)
Also, either upper or lower case letters with  size, so that b4p, B5p and a4l are all valid.  If −size size is not specified, the default size is used. The default in the case of the NWP-533 is A4P, and in the case of the NWP-537 it is the portrait orientation of the loaded cassette (A4P or B4P). For the NWP-543 the default is A4P. (The method of determining the default size when none is specified differs somewhat depending on the printer filter.)
If a size which is not supported is specified an error results, and nothing is printed. (This would be the case, for example, if A3P were specified for the NWP-533.)
If the lpr command is used, the format is Ssize (for example: −b:01:SA4P: ). In this case lower case letters cannot be used for size. Also, P may not be omitted when specifying portrait orientation.  Only A4P or B4P can be specified for lpf_lbp8em.

−cassette sequence
This specifies the sequence in which the paper cassettes will be used. It is valid only for the NWP-543. With the NWP-533/537 it is ignored.
sequence consists of a string contain one or more of the letters ´u´, ´l´, ´d´, ´U´, ´L´ or ´D´. The meanings of each are as follows.

uUpper cassette
lLower cassette
dPaper deck (NWA-041)
UUpper cassette (rotated 90 degrees)
LLower cassette (rotated 90 degrees)
DPaper deck (NWA-041) (rotated 90 degrees)

The default is udlUDL. In this case the paper size specified by −size is searched for first in the upper cassette position, then in the deck and finally in the lower cassette position. Next, paper rotated 90 degrees is searched for in the upper cassette position, the deck and in the lower cassette position. There are no A3L (A3 landscape) or B4L (B4 landscape) cassettes.
The paper sizes that can be used with the paper deck (NWA-041) are A4 landscape, B5 landscape and B4 portrait. Other sizes are not allowed. Specifications of cassette sizes which are not permitted are ignored.
When the lpr command is used, the format is  Csequence (for example: −b:01:CudlUDL: ).

−manualfeed

−manualfeed1 message
Specifies manual paper feed.
This specification is valid for the NWP-533/537 only. In the case of the NWP-543 an error will result, and nothing will be printed.
message can consist of up to 16 ASCII characters, not including spaces, tabs, carriage returns, control characters or : (colons).
The printer filter outputs a message including message when the printer is ready to print using manually fed sheets and waits for the pages to be fed.
See the “PRINTER OPERATION” section for information on the actual manual paper feed procedure.
When the lpr command is used, the format is  M−message (for example: −b:01:M−OHP: ).  If you specify this option for LBP−8 emulator, manual feed mode will be applied for all pages in spite of control sequence in data file.

−dup
Specifies dual-sided printing.
Results in the front and back of the page being printed so that the top and bottom line up. (Used when pages are to be bound horizontally.)
This option can be specified only when using the NWP-543 with the dual-sided printing module (NWA-044) connected. Otherwise an error will result, and nothing will be printed.
When the lpr command is used, the format is D (for example: −b:01:D: ).

−dupv
Specifies dual-sided printing of pages to be bound vertically.
Results in the front and back of the page being printed so that the right and left sides line up. (Used when pages are to be bound vertically.)
This option can be specified only when using the NWP-543 with the dual-sided printing module (NWA-044) connected. Otherwise an error will result, and nothing will be printed.
When the lpr command is used, the format is  DV (for example: −b:01:DV: ).

−lm num
Specifies the left margin.
This option is valid for the image board (NWB-242/243). It is ignored in the case of the NWB-240(A)/241(A)/244/245.
It is used to adjust the printing position. The unit is mm (millimeters). Print position is moved to the right by num mm.
The allowable range of values is −5 <= num <= 7.
When the lpr command is used, the format is  LMnum (for example: −b:01:LM-5: ).

−tm num
Specifies the top margin.
This option is valid for the image board (NWB-242/243). It is ignored in the case of the NWB-240(A)/241(A)/244/245.
It is used to adjust the printing position. The unit is mm (millimeters). Print position is moved to the lower by num mm.
The allowable range of values is −5 <= num <= 7.
In −5 is requested for NWP-543, −4 is assigned.
When the lpr command is used, the format is  TMnum (for example: −b:01:TM-5: ).

−tray tray
Specifies the paper output tray.
This option is valid only for the NWP-543 with the NWA-042 face-down stacker connected. It is ignored otherwise.
Either main or sub may be specified for tray. When this option is not specified the default is the main tray.
When the lpr command is used, the format is  Otray (for example: −b:01:Osub:).

−copies num
Specifies the number of copies to be printed.
The maximum value for num is 20 for double-sided printing. If a value of 21 or greater is specified for double-sided printing, only 20 copies are actually printed.
This option specifies the number of copies of each page, and the output is unsorted.
When the lpr command is used, the format is  #num (for example: −b:01:#2:).  If you specify this option for LBP−8 emulator, this number of copies will be applied for all pages in spite of control sequence in data file.

−trailer
Specifies that a trailer page (a delimiter page) be printed at the end of each file printed.
On the trailer page is printed information such as the name of the machine requesting the printing, the user name, the file name (where possible), any error messages generated during printing, etc.
When the lpr command is used, the format is  TR (for example: −b:01:TR:).

−tcassette sequence
Specifies the cassette sequence to be used for trailer pages.
This option is valid only for the NWP-543.
Basically, sequence is specified in the same manner as −cassette sequence.
If there is no usable paper in the specified cassette, the paper tray used to print the file is also used for the trailer page.
When the lpr command is used, the format is  TRCsequence (for example: −b:01:TRCudlUDL:).

−tsize size
Specifies the paper size to be used to print the trailer page.
This option is valid only for the NWP-543.
Basically, size is specified in the same manner as −size size.
If there is no usable paper of the specified size, the paper size used to print the file is also used for the trailer page.
When the lpr command is used, the format is  TRSsize (for example: −b:01:TRSA4L:).

−toner
Outputs an error to warn when the toner is out and waits for the toner cartridge to be replaced (NWP-533/537) or for the toner to be replenished (NWP-543).
If this option is not specified, the printer filter outputs a message when the toner runs out but printing continues (it is not handled as an error).
When the lpr command is used, the format is  ERT (for example: −b:01:ERT:).

USAGE EXAMPLE

% man −t man | a3sjlbp −size A4 −cassette uDU −dup −lm −5 −n The options specified in this example will result in man (1) being printed in the following manner.

−size A4PThe paper size is A4P (A4 portrait)

−cassette uDUThe sequence is: top cassette A4R (u), paper deck A4 (D), top cassette A4 (U)

−dupDouble-sided printing.

−lm −5Pages will be printed starting 5 mm to the left of the normal printing position.

−nditroff output.  The lpr command’s −bopt can also be used to set the same functions as the a3sjlbp option. When the lpr(1) command is used to set printer options, the −b option is followed by as many options as required separated by colons ( :), in this manner..

−b:01:opt1:opt2:....:optn:

If the lpr command is used to specify the printing parameters which were set in the usage example for a3sjlbp, the following format is used.  % man −t man | lpr −b:01:SA4P:CuDU:D:LM-5: −n

PRINTER OPERATION

Feeding paper manually
When manual paper feed is specified, the printer filter switches the printer to the manual mode when it is ready to print and outputs the following message. (This example is the first line displayed with the lpq command.) Manual feed: job:message job (if specified) is the JOB name which was set using lpr −J.
message (if specified) is the message which was specified using the −manualfeed1 option of message.  After this message is output, the LBP “PAPER LOADED” lamp goes out.
At this point the user should feed paper manually. The printer filter waits for paper to be fed manually for two minutes. If no paper is fed during this time, an error results, and the printer filter cancels printing of the job. When printing of the job using manual paper feed is finished, the printer filter switches LBP back to cassette feed and outputs the following message. Printer OK. At this point the “PAPER LOADED” lamp lights if there is paper in the cassette. If a trailer page has been specified, it is printed at this point using paper from the cassette.

Cassette change request
When printing commences, or if the current cassette runs out of paper, the printer filter searches for paper which matches the specified −size option in the cassettes in the order specified by the −cassette option.
If there is no cassette which matches the −size option specification loaded, a message requesting that the cassette be changed is displayed and the printer filter waits for the new cassette to be loaded. If no cassette is loaded for two minutes an error results, and the printer filter cancels printing of the job.

Paper out warning
If there is no cassette with paper which matches the −size option specification, a message requesting that the paper be replenished is displayed and the printer filter waits for new paper to be loaded.

DIAGNOSTICS

The following two checks are performed when the a3sjlbp command is used until an option is encountered which is not one of those characteristic of the LBP printer filter. For the −size option a check is performed to determine if the size is correct or not. In addition, a check is performed to ensure that there are no characteristic LBP printer filter options which have been specified twice. Error checking on all other options is performed by lpr(1) or the printer filter.
