NETLOAD(1M)  —  Silicon Graphics

NAME

netload - load networking code into Excelan front-end board (IP/TCP)

SYNOPSIS

netload [ -n internet_address ] [ -e address_block ] download file

DESCRIPTION

Netload loads the networking module, download file , into an Excelan front-end board,  then prints the software, firmware, and hardware version levels.  Only the superuser can use this program.

The download file is normally /etc/net/net .

OPTIONS

The -n option selects an arbitrary Internet address, which is specified in standard Internet dot notation.  If this option is not selected, the Internet address assigned to the board is constructed from the Ethernet address of the board.

The -e option selects the Ethernet Address Block.

The Ethernet Address Block specifies which address blocks the EXOS 8010 will accept and whether to enable the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP).  Permissible values are:

DEFAULT
Turns ARP off and specifies the value 08-00-14 (Excelan, Inc.’s block of Ethernet addresses). Use this if the network consists of EXOS boards, or boards which emulate Excelan addresses.

3COM
Turns ARP off and specifies the value 02-60-8C (3COM Corporation’s block of Ethernet addresses). Use this if the network consists of 3COM boards, unless those boards emulate Excelan addresses.

INTERLAN
Turns ARP off and specifies the value 02-07-01 (Interlan, Inc.’s block of Ethernet addresses). Use this if the network consists of Interlan boards, unless those boards emulate Excelan addresses.

ARP Turns ARP on.  ARP dynamically discovers the Ethernet address of other systems, the first time a connection to a system is requested.  Therefore, EXOS can communicate with any boards, provided that they also support ARP.  EXOS also responds to an ARP inquiry with its given Ethernet address.  ARP is automatically enabled for Class B and Class C networks.

When the protocol module is downloaded, it prints its effective Ethernet address. This shows the selected address block.
