     DESCRIPTION

          multimap organizes the color map as 16 small maps, each with

          a maximum of 256 RGB entries.  The number of entries in each

          map is 16 or 256 depending whether there are 4 or 8

          bitplanes.  multimap does not take effect until gconfig is

          called.
