 Description

scopaint (the Paint accessory) is a paint program that lets you create
icons and pictures, and edit xbm and xpm formatted files.

If you are running an R4 X server that supports 256 colors, you see two
windows when you invoke scopaint: the drawing window and the color
palette window. If you are running any other type of server, scopaint is
working in monochrome mode, and you see only the drawing window. The
main part of the drawing window is blank; this is the drawing area.
Along the top of the drawing area is a menu bar that contains File, Edit,
View, and Tools menus. Under the menu bar is a pattern palette that con-
tains eight stipple patterns. In monochrome mode, the stipple patterns
are composed of black-and-white bits; in color mode, the stipple patterns
are composed of two colors from your color palette. Along the left side
of the drawing area is the tool palette. From top to bottom the tools
are: Select Area, Line, Pencil, Fill, Eraser, Type, Rectangle, Oval, Hot
    spot, and Line Width.

The color palette window holds the colors that are currently in your
painting or colors that you select from the Color Picker. Button 1 and
Button 3 at the top of the color palette hold the colors currently
assigned to mouse button 1 and mouse button 3, respectively; the small
boxes in the middle of the palette hold all colors that you select from
the Color Picker. From the color palette, you can invoke the Color
Picker window by clicking on the Edit button or double-clicking on a
color box in the color palette. The Color Picker window contains an HSV
(hue, saturation, value) color wheel, a Grab Color button, and color
mapper buttons. See the Paint accessory online help for specific infor-
    mation.

 Command options

    scopaint supports all Xtoptions(X).

-height specifies the height of the drawing area in pixels

-width specifies the width of the drawing area in pixels

-zoomLevel specifies the magnification ratio of the actual painting
size to drawing area display: where 0 = 1:1 magnification; 1
                 = 1:2 magnification; 2 = 1:4 magnification; 3 = 1:8 magnifi-
cation, and the maximum ratio is 4 = 1:16.

    file specifies a scopaint file

 Desktop options

Some options provide keyboard sequences that you can use instead of
invoking the menu and using the mouse. For example, instead of opening
the File menu, then clicking on New, you can enter <Ctrl>N. Some menu
options also have an underlined letter you can use instead of using the
mouse. For example, typing the letter N from the File menu opens a new
file. File menu opens, saves, and renames files, and exits scopaint.

New creates a new drawing area in a separate window. It brings
up a dialog box that asks for a title and size. The maximum
size is 512 pixels in width by 720 pixels in height.
                 (<Ctrl>N).

Open opens a pre-existing drawing. It brings up a Selection dia-
log box that contains a list of filenames to select from.
                 (<Ctrl>O)

Save saves the current file. If you have not previously saved
the file, or if you are editing a read-only file, the Save
option is the same as the Save as option. (<Ctrl>S)

Save As... saves the file to another filename. It brings up a Selec-
tion dialog box that lets you rename the file. If the
filename you enter already exists, you are warned and asked
                 to select another name.

    Save As Monochrome
saves the current drawing as a monochrome file (xbm format-
ted). This option only displays on 256 color systems.

    Set Root Window
copies your painting to the root window. Note that the root
window is not visible if you are running the Desktop.

Exit exits scopaint and closes the current drawing only. If you
have multiple drawings open, scopaint continues running
until you close all of them. It also checks for ``dirty''
files and warns you if it finds any before it exits the
                 current drawing. (<Ctrl>E)

Edit menu cuts, copies, pastes, selects, and deletes drawing areas.

Undo undoes the last drawing operation. (<Ctrl><Bksp>)

Cut cuts the selected area and copies it to the clipboard. This
option is stippled until you select an area. (<Shift><Del>)

Copy copies the selected area to the clipboard. This option is
stippled until you select an area. (<Ctrl><Ins>)

Paste pastes a selection from the clipboard. If you paste a color
image from a drawing other than the one you are currently
editing, Paste allocates all of the image's new colors to
the color palette. You cannot paste a black and white draw-
ing into a color drawing, or a color drawing into a black
                 and white drawing. (<Shift><Ins>)

Delete deletes the selected area. This option is stippled until
                 you select an area. (<Ins>)

Select All makes the entire drawing a selected area. (<Ctrl>A)

View menu opens display windows and controls size of drawing window.

Zoom In magnifies the drawing area window. (<Ctrl><DownArrow>)

Zoom Out shrinks the drawing area window. (<Ctrl><UpArrow>)

Actual Size displays the drawing in a separate window in its actual size
with a 1:1 magnification with the drawing area. (<Ctrl>M)

Monochrome displays the drawing in a separate window with the colors
mapped to black and white. This option only displays on 256
                 color systems. (<Ctrl>B)

Tools menu changes fonts; fills, flips, inverts, moves, and rotates draw-
    ing areas.

Draw Filled fills the oval and rectangle tools with colors and patterns
as they are being drawn. (<Ctrl>F)

Fonts... displays a list of fonts to use with the Type tool. It
brings up a Font dialog box that lets you change and see
examples of fonts, styles and size of type. (<Ctrl>T)

Invert inverts the selected area. This option only works with
                 black and white drawings. (<Ctrl>I)

Rotate rotates the selected area by 90 degree increments.
                 (<Ctrl>R)

    Flip Horizontal
flips the selected area by horizontal axis.

    Flip Vertical
flips the selected area by vertical axis.

Nudge Up moves the selected area up in 1 pixel increments.
                 (<UpArrow>)

Nudge Right moves the selected area right in 1 pixel increments. (->)

Nudge Down moves the selected area down in 1 pixel increments.
                 (<DownArrow>)

Nudge Left moves the selected area left in 1 pixel increments. (<-)

Tool palette provides drawing tools. All tools affect the drawing area
beyond the drawing window while you are using them.

Select Area selects part of your drawing for copying, cutting, deleting,
                 duplicating, or moving
Line draws straight line. Depress the <Shift> key to draw lines
                 angled at 45 degrees.

    Pencil draws like a pencil

Fill fills area with color specified in Button 3 of the color
                 palette

Eraser erases area by filling with the background color

Type types keyboard characters on the drawing area

Rectangle draws filled rectangles or rectangle borders. Depress the
                 <Shift> key to draw squares.

Oval draws filled ovals or oval borders. Depress the <Shift> key
                 to draw circles.

Hotspot determines the hot spot of the pointer in xbm files

Line width determines the line width

Color palette holds colors that are currently in your painting or colors
that you select from the Color Picker.

Button 1 holds color currently assigned to mouse button 1 (foreground
                 color)

Button 3 holds color currently assigned to mouse button 3 (background
                 color)

New adds color boxes to the color palette

    Edit invokes the Color Picker

Color Picker controls the color scheme of your painting.

Color wheel lets you select colors for your color palette and painting.
The color wheel controls the hue and saturation of the
colors; the slider bar on the left of the color wheel con-
trols the hue of the colors in the wheel.

Grab Color lets you copy colors from anywhere on the Desktop

Maps to lets you map colors in your painting to black and white for
viewing or saving to a black and white format

Undo voids the color changes you have made to a color slot in the
                 color palette.

 Hardware support

scopaint requires an R4 X server that supports 256 colors to run in color
mode. scopaint runs in monochrome mode with all other servers. The color
palette and the Color Picker do not run in monochrome mode.

 Resources

You can customize some characteristics of scopaint by editing your own
personal X resource file; this file contains user preferences for all of
the X clients. If the file does not already exist, create it with the
    full pathname:

       $HOME/.Xdefaults-hostname

where $HOME represents your home directory and hostname is the name of
    the machine.

The most common resources are listed here. For a more complete list of
resources and guidelines on how to modify resources, refer to the Desktop
    Administrator's Guide.

    drawAreaWidth
specifies width of the drawing area in pixels. The default
is 64; the maximum is 512.

    drawAreaHeight
specifies height of the drawing area in pixels. The default
is 64; the maximum is 720.

    movingSelection
Set to true or false. This resource ``marches'' the dashed
lines around the perimeter of a selected area. The default
                 is ``FALSE''.

zoomLevel specifies the magnification ratio of the actual painting
size to the drawing area display. The default is 3: where 0
                 = 1:1 magnification; 1 = 1:2 magnification; 2 = 1:4 magnifi-
                 cation; 3 = 1:8 magnification, and the maximum ratio is 4 =
                 1:16.
