 scomail(X) 19 June 1992 scomail(X)

 Name

scomail - an accessory that sends and receives electronic mail messages

 Command syntax

    scomail

 Desktop syntax

    <double-click>Mail

 Description

New mail is announced by a letter sticking out of the Mail icon envelope.
The Mail icon's default location is on the Desktop or in the Accessories
panel To read messages, double-click on the Mail icon or run scomail from
the UNIX window. The Mailbox window is displayed with the name of the
default mail file as the title of the window. By default, the top half
of the window lists messages from the default mailbox.

The default mailbox is determined by the delivery agent. You must con-
figure an underlying delivery agent such as mmdf or execmail to use
scomail. When mmdf is used, the /usr/mmdftailor file determines the
location of the mail spool files, (whether they are in the user's home
directory.) When execmail is used, the default mailbox is
    /usr/spool/mail/username.

The command box, just below the menu bar, provides a quick way to do the
more common tasks. The icons are, from left to right: Create a message,
Forward a message, Reply to a message, Delete a message, and Save a mes-
sage. On the far right, the arrows move up and down the message list.

The lower half of the window contains the text of the message being read.

Messages can be saved to different folders. To create a folder, click on
the Save Message icon in the command box, (the fifth icon from the left
just below the menu bar.) The New Folder option in the File menu does
the same. To read messages in a particular folder, use the Open Folder
option in the File menu. When folders are opened, the messages they con-
tain are displayed as the current message list.

The menus in the Mailbox and Message windows provide options to create,
forward, reply to, and edit messages, and configure the mail environment.

NOTE Entering the underlined letter in each menu option has the
same effect as clicking on the option.

 Mailbox window

Read messages by highlighting them. To highlight a message, point to it
and click mouse button 1. If several messages are highlighted, the win-
dow displays the first message. To highlight more than one message,
press and hold mouse button 1 and drag the pointer over the messages you
    want to read.

    File menu

Use the File menu to open mail folders and print mail.

New Folder... opens a new folder; the accelerator is <Ctrl>N. A window
prompts you for the name and location of the folder.
Folders are put in $HOME/mailfolders by default.

Open Folder.. opens an existing folder in a separate window; the
accelerator is <Ctrl>O. window prompts you for the name
                   and location of the folder.

    Open Default Mailbox..
opens the default mailbox. If the mail delivery agent is
mmdf, this file is determined in the /usr/mmdf/mmdftailor
file. If the mail delivery agent is execmail, this file
                   is /usr/spool/mail/username.

Save Folder saves the current folder; the accelerator is <Ctrl>S.

Close closes the folder. If you made changes to the folder, a
message appears asking you if you want to save the
changes. Answering ``no'' abandons all changes you made
since you last saved the folder and closes the folder.

Print... prints the current message. A window shows the message to
be printed and asks if the header should be included.
Click on OK to print the message. Click on Setup to get
the Print Setup window. Click on Cancel to cancel the
printing. Click on Help to get help on the Print window.

Print Setup... gives you a window where you can include th print command
that prints mail messages. See lp(C). Click on OK to put
the current print in effect and close the window. Click
on Cancel to return to the print command used before the
Print Setup window was called. Click on Help to get help
                   on the Print Setup window.

Outbox open a window that contains all messages in the delivery
queue. This option is unavailable unless there are mes-
sages in the delivery queue. Delayed delivery must be
configured using Delivery Preferences in the Option menu.

The Delete button deletes the highlighted message from the
delivery queue. The Deliver NOW button sends all messages
in the outbox immediately. The Retrieve button puts the
highlighted message in the Message window so you can edit
it before sending it. When the edited message is sent,
the delay time starts over. The Close button closes the
                   window.

Messages are not delivered while the outbox is open except
by the Deliver NOW button, even if the delay time has
                   elapsed.

Exit All exits Mail; the accelerator is <Ctrl>E. If you have made
changes, a message appears asking if you if you want to
                   save any changes.

 Resources

You can customize some characteristics of scomail by editing your own
personal X resource file; this file contains user preferences for all of
the X clients. If the file does not already exist, create it with the
    full pathname:

       $HOME/.Xdefaults-hostname

where $HOME represents your home directory and hostname is the name of
the machine. If you change resources by directly editing the resource
file, the changes do not take effect until scomail is started again.

The most common resources are listed here. For a more complete list of
resources and guidelines on how to modify resources, refer to the Desktop
    Administrator's Guide.

includeDir directory to look for file to include. You can use
                   environment variables.

saveDir directory to save files in. You can use environment vari-
                   ables.

msgFont font to use for message list. This is not set by default.

    msgUrgentForeground
the color to use for urgent messages. If you have a 16-
color video adapter, be careful when setting this to an
absolute color; you may get an error if you use too many
                   colors.

Changes made to the resource file automatically appear in the scomail
window the next time you access the client.
