scomail(X) 19 June 1992 scomail(X) Name scomail - an accessory that sends and receives electronic mail messages Command syntax scomail Desktop syntax <double-click>Mail Description New mail is announced by a letter sticking out of the Mail icon envelope. The Mail icon's default location is on the Desktop or in the Accessories panel To read messages, double-click on the Mail icon or run scomail from the UNIX window. The Mailbox window is displayed with the name of the default mail file as the title of the window. By default, the top half of the window lists messages from the default mailbox. The default mailbox is determined by the delivery agent. You must con- figure an underlying delivery agent such as mmdf or execmail to use scomail. When mmdf is used, the /usr/mmdftailor file determines the location of the mail spool files, (whether they are in the user's home directory.) When execmail is used, the default mailbox is /usr/spool/mail/username. The command box, just below the menu bar, provides a quick way to do the more common tasks. The icons are, from left to right: Create a message, Forward a message, Reply to a message, Delete a message, and Save a mes- sage. On the far right, the arrows move up and down the message list. The lower half of the window contains the text of the message being read. Messages can be saved to different folders. To create a folder, click on the Save Message icon in the command box, (the fifth icon from the left just below the menu bar.) The New Folder option in the File menu does the same. To read messages in a particular folder, use the Open Folder option in the File menu. When folders are opened, the messages they con- tain are displayed as the current message list. The menus in the Mailbox and Message windows provide options to create, forward, reply to, and edit messages, and configure the mail environment. _________________________________________________________________________ NOTE Entering the underlined letter in each menu option has the same effect as clicking on the option. _________________________________________________________________________ Mailbox window Read messages by highlighting them. To highlight a message, point to it and click mouse button 1. If several messages are highlighted, the win- dow displays the first message. To highlight more than one message, press and hold mouse button 1 and drag the pointer over the messages you want to read. File menu Use the File menu to open mail folders and print mail. New Folder... opens a new folder; the accelerator is <Ctrl>N. A window prompts you for the name and location of the folder. Folders are put in $HOME/mailfolders by default. Open Folder.. opens an existing folder in a separate window; the accelerator is <Ctrl>O. window prompts you for the name and location of the folder. Open Default Mailbox.. opens the default mailbox. If the mail delivery agent is mmdf, this file is determined in the /usr/mmdf/mmdftailor file. If the mail delivery agent is execmail, this file is /usr/spool/mail/username. Save Folder saves the current folder; the accelerator is <Ctrl>S. Close closes the folder. If you made changes to the folder, a message appears asking you if you want to save the changes. Answering ``no'' abandons all changes you made since you last saved the folder and closes the folder. Print... prints the current message. A window shows the message to be printed and asks if the header should be included. Click on OK to print the message. Click on Setup to get the Print Setup window. Click on Cancel to cancel the printing. Click on Help to get help on the Print window. Print Setup... gives you a window where you can include th print command that prints mail messages. See lp(C). Click on OK to put the current print in effect and close the window. Click on Cancel to return to the print command used before the Print Setup window was called. Click on Help to get help on the Print Setup window. Outbox open a window that contains all messages in the delivery queue. This option is unavailable unless there are mes- sages in the delivery queue. Delayed delivery must be configured using Delivery Preferences in the Option menu. The Delete button deletes the highlighted message from the delivery queue. The Deliver NOW button sends all messages in the outbox immediately. The Retrieve button puts the highlighted message in the Message window so you can edit it before sending it. When the edited message is sent, the delay time starts over. The Close button closes the window. Messages are not delivered while the outbox is open except by the Deliver NOW button, even if the delay time has elapsed. Exit All exits Mail; the accelerator is <Ctrl>E. If you have made changes, a message appears asking if you if you want to save any changes. Edit menu Use the Edit menu to delete messages and edit mail before you send it. Cut is currently unsupported. Copy is currently unsupported. Paste is currently unsupported. Delete deletes the highlighted message or message; the accelera- tor is <Del>. Undelete restores a deleted message. Select All highlights all messages. View menu Use the View menu to view messages in the message list. View All displays all messages in the message list. View Deleted displays all messages deleted from the message list. View Restricted displays a window that restricts the messages displayed in the message list. The Restrict Folder field shows the current folder. To choose a different folder, click on the button and choose from the pop-up menu. Click on the button next to the category you want to use to limit the messages that you see. ``Subject'' displays only messages with the specified subject. ``From'' dis- plays only messages from the specified persons. ``Key- word'' displays only messages that contain the specified keyword in the keyword field. ``Text'' displays only mes- sages that contain the specified string in its text. ``To'' displays only messages to the specified persons. Click on Apply to change the message list for that folder. Click on Close to close the window. Click on Help to get help on the Restrict Message List window. Search menu Use the Search menu to read messages. Next reads the next message in the message list; the accelerator is the down arrow. Clicking on the down arrow in the command box also moves to the next message. Previous reads the previous message in the message list; the accelerator is the up arrow. Clicking on the up arrow in the command box also moves to the previous message. Go New reads the next new message in the message list. Go Same Subject reads the next message with the same subject in the mes- sage list. Message menu Use the Message menu to send messages. Create Message... displays the Message window; the accelerator is <Ctrl>C. As a short cut, you can click on the Create icon (first from the left) in the command box. See ``Message window'' below. Forward Message... displays the Forward Mail Message window; the accelerator is <Ctrl>F. As a short cut, you can click on the Forward icon (second from the left) in the command box. Click on any box in the Forward Mail Message window to make changes. The ``Subject'' box contains the subject of the forwarded message. The ``To'' box contains the list of people to receive the message. The ``CC'' box contains the list of people to receive a copy of the message. The ``Comment'' box contains a optional comment to preface the forwarded message. By default the message configured through the Message Preferences option in the Option menu is used. If there is no comment in either place, no pre- face is included. Click on Send to forward the message, or put it in the outbox if delayed delivery is configured. Click on Edit to open the Message window and edit the message before forwarding it. Click on Cancel to cancel everything and close the window. Click on Help button to get help on the Forward Mail Message window. Reply to Message... displays the Message window with the Subject and To taken from the message currently being read. Either reply to all persons in the To list, or The accelerator is <Ctrl>R. As a short cut, you can click on the Reply icon (third from the left) in the command box. Resume Message... opens a message that you have already started writing so that you can complete it; the accelerator is <Ctrl>M. A window prompts you for a list of messages on hold. Select the message and click on OK to resume editing. Save To Folder: moves the highlighted message from the message list to the specified folder; this is the last folder to which you saved mail. If no folder is listed, a window prompts you for the name of the folder. Save To... moves the highlighted message from the message list to a file or a folder. A window prompts you for the name of the folder. Save To a File... save the message to any file. Option menu Use the Option menu to customize folders and mail preferences. Folder Preferences... displays the Folder Preferences window. Mail can be sort your by the date it arrived, or by the date it was sent. Click on the Delete Saved button to delete mail that has been saved to a folder or file; otherwise saved mail remains in the message list. Message Preferences... displays the Message Preferences window. The indent string is a set of characters the precedes a your comments in a reply. The forward comment introducer is put in front of messages that are forwarded. Click on the Auto Indent button to automatically indent any included mes- sages. Click on Show Headers to show the complete mail header; turn this off to show only the Subject, To, and From. Deliver Preferences... displays a window where you can set how messages are delivered. A reply can be automatically delivered to the entire To list, or only to the originator of the message. A reply can automatically include the message to which it is replying in the reply. It can also automatically indent the included message. Message window Messages are composed and edited in this window. Use the File menu to create and edit messages. New Message creates a new message; the accelerator is <Ctrl>N. Hold Message puts the message on hold for later editing. A window prompts you for the name of the hold file located in $HOME/.holdmail. Enter the name and click on OK to edit the message. Resume Message retrieves a message that was put on hold; the accelerator is <Ctrl>A. A window prompts you for the name of file in $HOME/.holdfile. Select the message and click on OK to resume editing. Deliver sends the message; the accelerator is <Ctrl>D. Print... prints the current message. A window shows the message to be printed and asks if the header should be included. Click on OK to print the message. Click on Setup to get the Print Setup window. Edit menu Use the Edit menu to edit the message. Undo removes the last change to the message text. Cut removes the highlighted text. Copy copies the highlighted area to where the cursor is. Paste puts the contents of the cut buffer (filled with the Cut option) where the cursor is. Delete deletes the highlighted text. Search menu Use the Search menu to search for text strings. Find provides a window to define the text string to search for. Find Next finds the next occurrence of the string defined in the Find window; the accelerator is <F3>. Option menu Use the Option menu to define message and delivery preferences. Message Preferences: See ``Option menu'' in ``Mailbox window.'' Deliver Preferences: See ``Option menu'' in ``Mailbox window.'' Resources You can customize some characteristics of scomail by editing your own personal X resource file; this file contains user preferences for all of the X clients. If the file does not already exist, create it with the full pathname: $HOME/.Xdefaults-hostname where $HOME represents your home directory and hostname is the name of the machine. If you change resources by directly editing the resource file, the changes do not take effect until scomail is started again. The most common resources are listed here. You can use environment variables. saveDir directory to save files in. You can use environment vari- ables. msgFont font to use for message list. This is not set by default. msgUrgentForeground the color to use for urgent messages. If you have a 16- color video adapter, be careful when setting this to an absolute color; you may get an error if you use too many colors.
