 Name

    netbios - NetBIOS STREAMS driver

 Description

netbios is a multiplexing STREAMS driver that implements NetBIOS over
TCP/IP, as defined in RFC1001 and RFC1002 (excluding the name server and
datagram distribution server). Only the broadcast mode of operation is
supported. If multicasting is available, the NetBIOS broadcast address
can be set to the appropriate multicast address.

Note that NetBIOS names are qualified by a Domain Name Service style
domain string called the ``scope.'' All machines that are to interact
via NetBIOS must agree on the setting of the scope string. By using dif-
ferent scope names on different sets of machines, several disjoint
NetBIOS name spaces may exist on one network.

The scope, internet broadcast address, and other parameters are set by
the NetBIOS daemon, /etc/nbd. See netbios(ADMN) and nbd(ADMN) for
    further information.

Each open of /dev/netbios creates a new, distinct NetBIOS user
environment. Each user environment has its own local name table, local
session table, and permanent node name. Users in different NetBIOS user
environments on a machine appear, to each other and to users on other ma-
chines, to be on separate machines.

This device should be accessed through the NetBIOS Transport Provider de-
vices (see nbtpi(ADMP)). The actual protocol used to interact directly
with the netbios driver is not documented here.
