 Name

rlpconf - configure remote line printers

 Syntax

    /etc/rlpconf

 Description

rlpconf configures remote line printers. This command edits the remote
line printer description file /etc/printcap and creates the spooling
directory for the remote line printers. The spooling directory is always
located in /usr/spool/lpd and bears the name of the printer.

rlpconf is used interactively. The user is prompted to provide informa-
tion about the printer. The information includes the printer name, the
name of the remote host the printer is attached to, and the name of the
device file for the printer if the printer is attached to the local host.
rlpconf will check that the printer is not already listed in
/etc/printcap. If it is, the printer information is not added again. If
it is not, the printer information is added to /etc/printcap. In addi-
tion, the spooling directory for the printer is created.

If the printer is attached to a remote machine, rlpconf asks if the
printer is the system default. If the printer is to be the system
default, the file /usr/spool/lp/default is updated to contain the name of
the printer. The configuration information indicating the name of the
printer and the remote machine is stored in a file called configuration
located in a subdirectory bearing the printer's name under
    /usr/spool/lp/admins/lp/printers/*/configuration.
