NSWSd(8C)  —  UNIX Programmer’s Manual

NAME

NSWSd − NextStep(tm) Window Server front-end daemon

SYNOPSIS

/usr/lib/NextStep/NSWSd

DESCRIPTION

NSWSd is the TCP/IP front end for the NextStep(tm) window server.  When running on a NeXT computer, the window server accepts Mach message-based connections (see The NeXT System Reference Manual for more details).  In order to easily allow clients running on non-NeXT hosts to connect to the window gserver, the NSWSd daemon accepts TCP/IP connections from clients and then forms on their behalf Mach message-based connections to the window server on the machine where NSWSd is running.  NSWSd is automatically launched from inetd when a client requests a connection for NSWS service.

NSWSd operates as an unknown, untrusted program to the window server; therefore, the user who is currently logged in on the machine must have Public Window Server in his Preferences database set to true in order for NSWSd to function properly.  In particular, this means that NSWSd cannot accept connections if no one is logged in on the machine where it is running.

DIAGNOSTICS

All diagnostic messages are logged on the system console.
