LOOKUPD(8)  —  UNIX Programmer’s Manual

NAME

/usr/etc/lookupd − lookup daemon

SYNOPSIS

lookupd

DESCRIPTION

lookupd is used in conjunction with NetInfo to speed up various system lookups, such as host entries, user names and printer names. For ease of administration, lookupd caches, with two exceptions, only information about netinfo domains, it does not cache what they actually store so that when changes are made, they are seen immediately by all clients.  The two exceptions are lists of passwd and alias entries. Individual lookups are not cached, but the lists are so that things like tilde user name expansion will work quickly.  lookupd periodically (every 30 minutes) refreshes the values in these lists.

lookupd supports Yellow Pages and BIND compatibility. By default, these features are turned off. Yellow Pages can be switched on via the NetManager application. BIND is enabled by the existence of an /etc/resolv.conf file. The search policy when these are enabled is to try NetInfo first. If located there, return the result. Otherwise, BIND is tried next (for host addresses only), then YP.
