  NAME

    hostname - Sets or displays name of current host system

  SYNOPSIS

    hostname [nameofhost]

  DESCRIPTION

    The hostname command displays the name of the current host, as given
    before the login prompt, and defaults to the value set on the ``Operating
    System Parameters'' page in the Startup Utility.  The superuser may change
    the hostname by supplying an argument.

  EXAMPLES

    1.  To display the name of the current host:

        hostname


    2.  To temporarily set the name of the current host to tempname (permanent
        changes must be made using startup).  The following example requires
        superuser privileges:

        hostname tempname


  NOTES

    Permanent hostname changes can only be made from the Startup Utility.

  EXIT VALUES

    The hostname command exits with a 0 if successful, and a 1 if an error
    occurs.

  DIAGNOSTICS

    The following message appears for hostname:

    set hostname: not owner
           Superuser privileges are required to change the hostname.
