DESCRIPTION

Showps and bits4216 are used to allow softcopy preview of PostScript programs on X11 using the IBM 4216 Personal Pageprinter controller.  A bitmap file is created by the utility bits4216 and is displayed with the utility showps.  The left and right mouse buttons are used to page forward and backward respectively through a multi-page bitmap file.  In order to kill the preview window, press both buttons of the mouse while the cursor is over the window. 

The −f option for bits4216 is used to specify which device to use.  If the −f option is not given, /dev/ps0 will be used.  Psfile is the name of the PostScript program to be previewed.  The bitmap that is generated from psfile will be stored in psbitfile if given.  If psbitfile is not given then standard output will be used.  The showps option -display host:display indicates the host (machine) and on which display of that machine to use.  If this option is not given then the environment variable “DISPLAY” will be used.  The bitmap file psbitfile will be displayed if given.  If psbitfile is not given then standard input will be used.

BUGS

The displayed page may not fit on some monitors. 

Sometimes packets left over from a previous job will confuse bits4216. 

Piping a multi-page bitmap file from bits4216 to showps can cause strange things to happen.  It is best to use the intermediate file psbitfile.
