vipw



PURPOSE

Edits the password file.

SYNTAX


vipw ---|


DESCRIPTION

The vipw command edits the password file while setting the appropriate locks
and does any necessary processing after the password file is unlocked.  If the
password file is already being edited, you are told to try again later.  The vi
editor is used unless the environment variable EDITOR indicates an alternate
editor.  If it cannot find vi, it tries to find the ed editor.  The user is
notified that ed is used and what the command is to get out of ed.  The vipw
command performs consistency checks on the password entry for root and does not
allow a password file with an incorrect root entry to be installed.  Only ASCII
characters can be entered in the password file.
