NAME

xps − display process status graphically

SYNOPSIS

xps [−r n] [−p] [−os] [−l1]
          [−m] [−a]
          [−large] [−small]
          X_options

DESCRIPTION

xps is part of the HP/PAK performance analysis kit.  It displays dynamic bar charts showing the percentages of CPU time being consumed by processes running on a machine.  Each of the user’s own processes is displayed with a separate bar.  By default, all other user processes and all OS processes are shown as separate groups, with a single bar used for each group.  The −p option expands the Other Processes group to show individual processes.  The −l1 option expands the OS Processes group.  In addition to process status information, xps displays bar charts showing disk and network I/O activity for the whole machine.  xps periodically samples the operating system and uses the acquired data to update the process and I/O displays.  The default update interval is 4 seconds, but you can change it by using the −r n option.  Note that, regardless of the update rate, the displayed process statistics represent a moving average over time.  While xps is running, you can use the following keys to move within the window and to exit:

PREV or PAGE UP Scroll backward 1/2 window

NEXT or PAGE DOWN Scroll forward 1/2 window

<Shift-Up arrow> Scroll backward 1 line

<Shift-Down arrow> Scroll forward 1 line

<Ctrl-T> Move to top

<Ctrl-B> Move to bottom

<Ctrl-H> or <Shift-H> Help

<Ctrl-C> or <Ctrl-N> Exit

OPTIONS

−r n Update the display every n seconds. By default, the display is updated every 4 seconds.

−p Expand the Other Processes group to show a bar for each process. Other processes are all user processes other than the user’s own processes.  By default, xps groups all these processes and displays them with a single bar.

−os Group all OS server processes and display them with a single bar.  This is the default.

−l1 Expand the OS Processes group to show a bar for each process.  By default, xps groups all these processes and displays them with a single bar.

−m Show a bar for idle (unused) CPU time.  Idle time is calculated as 100% minus the sum of all current process times.  By default, this bar is not displayed.

−a Show all information (same as −p −l1 −m).

−large Use large font for display.  This is the default.

−small Use small font for display.

X_options Execute any standard X command line options. Valid X command line options include: −background, −foreground, −display, −synchronous, and -reverse. (See The X Window System Programming and Applications, D. A. Young.)

EXAMPLES

The following examples illustrate how to use xps:

$ xps

Display the user’s own processes separately, with other user processes and OS processes grouped.  Also show disk and network I/O usage.

$ xps −l1 −small

Using the small font, display the user’s own processes and OS processes separately, with other user processes grouped.  Also show disk and network I/O usage.
