NAME

mklp − configure the LP spooler subsystem

SYNOPSIS

/etc/mklp

REMARKS

This command is implemented as a shell script, and varies somewhat among HP-UX implementations.  This description applies to all systems; further details are found in the commentary of the script itself.

DESCRIPTION

mklp is a shell script that helps simplify the task of configuring supported printers and plotters into the LP spooler on the HP-UX system where it resides.  Since mklp is a shell script, users must have whatever subsystem and kernel authorizations are required to run the commands contained in the mklp script.  mklp can be executed only by users who have appropriate privileges.  Although specific printing and plotting options may vary among the different kinds devices in the LP spooler subsystem, administration techniques are much more uniform.  The differences between devices and types of devices are described in the mklp script itself.

The principal purpose of the mklp script is to make it easier to configure the LP spooler as a single operation.  However, mklp can also be used to rebuild the subsystem, if desired.

mklp should be modified before each use.  Command lines related to printers that are not present or are not being used should be commented out by inserting a # character (comment indicator) to keep them available for later use.

Refer to the script itself or to the system administration manuals supplied with your system for information about major and minor numbers used when creating device special files.

DIAGNOSTICS

Each command line in mklp is echoed as it is executed.  Error messages, if any, are generated by the commands invoked.

The mklp script file must be modified before using it for the first time.  To prevent use of an unaltered file, mklp returns an error message if it has not been modified.

AUTHOR

mklp was developed by HP.
