NODENAME(1) — Series 300 and 800 Only
NAME
nodename − assign a network node name or determine current node name
SYNOPSIS
nodename [ nodename ]
DESCRIPTION
nodename is used to assign a network node name to your computer. Nodename is a super-user only command.
The following parameters may be set with nodename:
nodename The Network Services (NS) node name you choose for your computer. nodename must be of the form node.domain.organization Each field can be up to 16 alphanumeric, underscore (_) or dash (-) characters. The first character must be alphabetic. The domain and organization fields are arbitrary labels. These labels may be useful for grouping nodes and collections of nodes, but they do not indicate anything about the structure of the network.
Default: the nodename command without any parameters returns the current node name to standard output.
The name assigned by nodename is used by the LAN diagnostic, rlb, and by the NS/9000 NFT and RFA services.
By convention, the “node” field of your node name should duplicate the host name field in the /etc/hosts file. If your node also implements ARPA Services, by convention the node field of your node name should duplicate the UUCP host name assigned during SENDMAIL configuration.
DIAGNOSTICS
Messages indicate a non-super-user attempted to assign a node name. No current node name will be assigned.
DEPENDENCIES
Implemented on the Series 300 and 800 only.
